Celebrating Heritage: A Triple Milestone for the Perak Ku Kong Chow Association
On 30th November 2024, the Perak Ku Kong Chow Association in Ipoh hosted an extraordinary event, celebrating three significant milestones: the association’s 96th anniversary, the 41st anniversary of its youth wing, and also the 26th anniversary of its women’s wing.
Held at the New She Lai Ton Restaurant, the occasion brought together members, dignitaries, and guests from other districts of Perak as well as other states of Malaysia for an evening filled with cultural performances, inspiring speeches, and a celebration of community spirit.
A Grand Opening with Energy and Unity
The event began with an electrifying line dancing performance by the youth and women’s wings, setting an energetic and festive tone. This presentation was followed by an opening speech by Datuk Yik Phooi Hong, president of the association (Perak state)-cum-chairman of the organising committee, who expressed gratitude to members for their continuous support plus contributions.
In his speech, Datuk Yik underscored the association’s core mission of fostering unity and preserving cultural traditions. He passionately remarked, “Our association exists to connect with our roots and pass on our cultural heritage. Without a sense of belonging, we are like a kite without a string; without our traditions, we are like a tree without roots.”
He highlighted several recent initiatives that exemplified these values, including a homecoming trip earlier in November. Members visited ancestral locations at Heshan and Xinhui in China, where they engaged with local communities, explored traditional practices, and enjoyed authentic cuisine.
Datuk Yik described the trip as a meaningful journey that deepened members’ appreciation of their heritage.
A recent achievement by the Perak Ku Kong Chow Association was the conversion of its original premises into the Kwan Tak-hing Memorial Hall, inaugurated on 8th September 2024. Dedicated to the legendary martial arts cinema figure with ties to the association, the hall stands as a tribute to cultural pride and historical legacy.
Distinguished Guests Share Insights and Nostalgia
The celebration welcomed prominent dignitaries, including Dato’ Desmond Chong, president of the Federation of Koo Kong Chau Luk Yup Association Malaysia, who commended the association’s efforts. He shared his vision of engaging younger generations through community projects such as blood donation drives and 4×4 convoy flood relief initiatives.
Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen, president of the Federation of Jiangmen Association Malaysia and The United Sabah Sze Yip Association, shared her heartfelt connection to Ipoh, describing her visit as akin to returning to her roots.
During her speech, she took the opportunity to thank Perak Ku Kong Chow president Datuk Yik Phooi Hong for his donation of RM30,000 to her association in Sabah.
As a reciprocal gesture, Datuk Susan Wong performed five evergreen songs, which resonated with the audience. Many of them sang and clapped along.
Renowned personalities, celebrity chef Martin Yan, Prof. Datuk Sri Dr Chan Fa Deng, Singapore Chef Jackfy 陈伟强 (Chen Weiqiang), and TV celebrity Sunny 黄照康 (Huang Zhaokang) from Hong Kong added a touch of glamour to the evening. These esteemed guests were presented with tokens of appreciation by the association.
Recognising Achievements and Celebrating Talent
The joyous occasion featured a celebratory cake-cutting ceremony and champagne toast, symbolising the association’s enduring legacy. The focus then turned to the younger generation, as the association honoured academic excellence by presenting certificates and cash awards to outstanding students from member families.
The festivities continued with captivating performances, including a set by popular charity singer Ho Foong. A lively karaoke session followed, offering guests a chance to showcase their talents and contribute to the evening’s joyful atmosphere.
Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future
The triple celebration at the Perak Ku Kong Chow Association exemplified the harmony of tradition, community, and forward-thinking. Datuk Yik’s speech encapsulated the importance of staying rooted in cultural heritage while building bridges for future generations.
As the association commemorated these milestones, it reaffirmed its commitment to preserving cultural identity and fostering unity among its members. Through initiatives that blend tradition with modern relevance, the Perak Ku Kong Chow Association continues to strengthen its role as a pillar of cultural pride and community growth.
