The picture-perfect image of Ahri, the nine-tailed fox in League of Legends, made Angel Chooi, a 24-year-old kindergarten teacher from Kuala Lumpur, the runaway winner at Ipoh Parade’s inaugural Cosplay Competition.
Angel, who goes by the stage name King Angel, vanquished 28 other cosplayers to bag the top prize of RM2000 cash. “It took me months of preparation to source and make the costume and practise putting on the makeup,” Angel said, adding that she thoroughly enjoyed the limelight.
Clinching second place was King Rusydi in an elaborate costume and headgear, who cosplayed Kamen Rider Faiz in the TV series Kamen Rider 555. Third place was Hayate who played Elsa of Frozen, rendering the famous theme song and re-enacting the epic snowy scene.
Much-loved six-year-old Fredston Wang who donned the Monkey King costume and mask to portray the Monkey King in the video game version of “Journey to the West”, tickled the audience and won big rounds of applause with his playful monkey antics swinging a golden cudgel. He won a consolation prize.
The event, in conjunction with the week-long Haru Matsuri Japanese Spring Festival at the shopping mall, attracted some 80 cosplayers from all over the country, who were dressed up for the occasion in fanciful outfits and gears.
Catching the attention of shoppers during the cosplay party were Ironman, Joker, Aquaman, Barbie Girl, Ancient Chinese General Zhao Yun and more.
