The late Sultan Azlan Shah was conferred the ‘Member of Honour’ Award by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) for his years of outstanding contribution to hockey, not only at the national level but also continental and international levels.
The award was presented by FIH President Leandro Negre to Sultan Azlan’s heir HRH Sultan Nazrin Shah at the official dinner of the 25th Silver Jubilee Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh.
During the dinner, Negre also announced the creation of the prestigious HRH Sultan Azlan Shah Award, in memory of the late Sultan’s spirit and dedication. The award will be presented biennially during FIH’s Ordinary Congress.
The accolade is designed to acknowledge and celebrate the actions and achievements undertaken by an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the hockey fraternity and whose leadership, vision and drive make him or her an inspirational role model beyond the sport of hockey.
Also present at the event were President of the Asian Hockey Federation Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and his Chief Executive Officer Mr. Tayyab Ikram, Perak Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri DiRaja Dr. Zambry bin Abd. Kadir, President of Perak Hockey Association-cum-Chairperson of the organising committee for Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2016 Datuk Abdul Rahim Md Ariff, Ipoh City Mayor Dato’ Zamri Man and other dignitaries.
They included diplomats, hockey officials, umpires and team members of the seven participating nations of Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, Pakistan, India and host, Malaysia.
The official dinner, traditionally hosted two days before the end of the tournament, allowed everyone in the hockey fraternity to mingle among themselves.
It was also an event to show appreciation to those who have made the tournament a success, as well as an opportunity to exchange gifts between the teams and their host.
