The 2012 Perak state-level Chap Goh Mei (the “fifteenth night” in Hokkien dialect) celebration was the largest ever held in the state. Thousands of people, mainly Chinese, converged at Kwan Yin Tong, a Goddess of Mercy limestone cave temple along Jalan Gopeng, Ipoh, to celebrate the festival, known as the Chinese Valentine’s Day.

The celebration, which has been incorporated into the state’s Visit Perak Year 2012 calendar, was for the first time, supported by the state government. This is expected to be an annual celebration. Perak Chief Minister, Y.A.B. Dato’ Seri DiRaja Zambry Abd Kadir, who was joined by his wife, Y.A.B. Datin Seri DiRaja Saripah Zulkifli, Y.B. Dato’ Hamidah Osman, Y.B. Dato’ Dr. Mah Hang Soon, En. Ahmad Fathil Abdul Ghani, CEO Perak Tourism, among other VIPs, announced an allocation of RM100,000 for the organisation of this event.
