Visit Johor Year 2026: Let’s Rediscover Johor
With Visit Johor Year 2026 drawing near in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year, the vibrant southern state of Johor invites travellers to explore its exciting blend of modern attractions, historical landmarks, and breathtaking coastal escapes. From spirited cityscapes to tranquil islands, Johor unfolds as a destination for every kind of explorer.

Exploring Johor Bahru and Beyond
Begin your Johor adventure at one of its proudest icons, the Stadium Sultan Ibrahim in Gelang Patah. Home to the Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) Football Club, this magnificent stadium opened in 2020 and was inspired by Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium. Beyond its architectural grandeur, it symbolises the state’s forward-looking spirit.

The stadium tour offers a guided exploration of its impressive architecture, interactive displays showcasing the team’s history and trophies, and behind-the-scenes access to the locker rooms, VIP areas, and player tunnel, giving fans a deeper appreciation of JDT’s legacy. With a capacity of 40000, Stadium Sultan Ibrahim is one of the largest and most modern football stadiums in Southeast Asia.

End your tour with a relaxing Hummer ride around the stadium’s sweeping grounds and feel the energy that fuels Johor’s football passion, a memorable finale to the JDT experience. This special ride is available with an additional RM30 fee on top of the RM60 normal stadium tour.

From there, head to the Johor Zoo, one of Malaysia’s oldest, where families can spend a pleasant afternoon meeting over a hundred species of animals. It’s a nostalgic retreat; simple, endearing, and full of charm.
Established in 1928 during the British colonial era, this 12.5-hectare sanctuary continues to enchant generations of visitors with its nostalgic charm. While it may not boast the size or grandeur of Kuala Lumpur’s Zoo Negara, its appeal lies in its simplicity, offering a wholesome, old-fashioned zoo experience that connects people with nature in a calm, familiar way.
Families, tourists, and animal lovers alike come here not just for a day out, but for a glimpse into Malaysia’s wildlife heritage. Within its leafy grounds are more than 100 animal species, ranging from the majestic Malayan tiger and gentle Asian elephant to the quirky tapir with its black-and-white coat.
Visitors can spot hornbills flitting about, observe orangutans swinging lazily from branches, or catch a close look at saltwater crocodiles resting by the water’s edge. For children, the zoo is an outdoor classroom filled with wonder, from the engaging animal shows that bring the keepers’ stories to life, to the nocturnal house that lets them watch creatures of the night in their element.
Just 20 minutes’ drive away, nature lovers will find peace at Sireh Park, Iskandar Puteri, a vast green sanctuary of lakes, trails, and hills. Recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records in July 2025 as the largest urban community green recreational park in Malaysia, Sireh Park spans 343 acres of revitalised land that was once a coconut plantation and secondary forest.

Today, it preserves the biodiversity of plants and local habitats while encouraging community participation in environmental care through various educational programmes and activities. The park offers a range of recreational and learning facilities, including walking trails, hiking routes, mountain biking, kayaking, and bamboo rafting on the lake, as well as ATV rides, glamping, and camping sites.

Sireh Park’s sustainability programme, “Plant That Tree” aims to plant 25000 trees by 2028 (with over 11,300 already planted), reflecting its commitment to a greener future. Essentially, it offers a natural retreat and urban escape for city dwellers seeking rejuvenation amidst nature.

For those exploring further, Johor Bahru’s historic landmarks such as Masjid Sultan Abu Bakar, Zero Mile, and Jalan Tan Hiok Nee reveal the city’s rich heritage through architecture, murals, and old-world charm.
Families can also look forward to a world of creative play at Legoland Malaysia or experience icy fun at nearby SnowLand JB in Medini, an indoor snow playland that brings a touch of winter magic to tropical Malaysia.

A Taste of Johor Bahru
Johor’s culinary landscape mirrors its diversity; a celebration of flavours drawn from Malay, Chinese, Indian, and international traditions.

For those craving seafood, Restoran Lobstam in Gelang Patah offers delicious ocean-fresh dishes at very reasonable prices. Personal favourites include the Ketam Lemak, Siput Sedut Lemak, and Ikan Asam Pedas, each one rich, aromatic, and bursting with flavour.
Meanwhile, Pendas Café at Hotel Sunway Big Box serves a hearty buffet of local and international dishes in a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.

Prefer something more leisurely? The cafés and food stalls around Sireh Park make for perfect casual stops: a good cup of coffee, a warm meal, and the soothing company of nature.

Although not in or near Johor Bahru, it’s worth mentioning that Kluang RailCoffee in Yong Peng makes a delightful stop for a fulfilling meal, especially if you’re driving from Kuala Lumpur.

Conveniently located just off the North-South Expressway, it can be reached via the Yong Peng North Toll Plaza. The coffee and charcoal-grilled toast here are excellent, and personal favourites include the mee goreng and curry laksa – both full of local flavour and nostalgia.

Desaru Fruit Farm
Spanning 180 acres, the award-winning Desaru Fruit Farm has been recognised as Malaysia’s Best Agro-Tourism Site. The tour begins with a mini truck ride that takes visitors to the starting point of the guided walking tour, offering insights into tropical fruit cultivation and sustainable farming practices.

Along the trail, visitors explore the Agricultural Gallery, where vintage farming tools and old methods are displayed, painting a vivid picture of Malaysia’s agricultural heritage. The tour ends at the petting zoo, home to goats, rabbits, ostriches, and even camels. Unsurprisingly, this is a favourite stop for families and children.

The experience concludes with a delightful fruit-tasting session, where visitors can savour freshly picked tropical fruits straight from the orchard.

Golf with a View: The Els Club Desaru Coast
For golf enthusiasts, the Valley Course at The Els Club Desaru Coast, designed in collaboration between Ernie Els and Vijay Singh, delivers sweeping views and a world-class golfing experience. The 18-hole, par-72 championship course is set amidst rolling hills and lush landscapes, offering both beauty and challenge for players of all skill levels.

The clubhouse features premium facilities, including a pro shop, locker rooms, and a restaurant overlooking the greens. Golfers can also practise at the driving range or enjoy the nearby Ocean Course, which offers coastal fairways with breathtaking views of the South China Sea. Together, these twin courses position The Els Club Desaru Coast as one of Malaysia’s premier golf destinations.

Island Escapes from Mersing
Journey east to Mersing, the gateway to Johor’s island treasures. From here, hop on a boat to Pulau Hujung, Pulau Tengah, or Pulau Besar, where crystal waters beckon for snorkelling and adventure. Have a cocktail by the shore or simply drift with the tide in complete serenity.

Visit the Tunku Abdul Jalil Conservation Centre, dedicated to protecting sea turtles and their nesting grounds. Visitors can join a turtle hatchery tour, where they’ll learn about conservation efforts and observe the hatchery up close.

The centre also hosts science talks on marine life and environmental sustainability. As it is located on a private island, most activities are arranged through Batu-Batu Resort for its guests. Visitors are encouraged to check the schedule at the resort reception.

Back in Mersing town, don’t miss Perusahaan Keropok Pak Dol, where you can pick up prawn crackers, dried seafood snacks, and local favourites like lekor and satar to take home. Or stop by Kuntum Café in Teluk Buih for aromatic coffee, rustic charm, and heartwarming local dishes before or after your island getaway.

Staying in and Around Mersing
Each of Mersing’s nearby islands has its own unique character, offering visitors a range of experiences, from laid-back family retreats to secluded luxury escapes surrounded by turquoise waters and coral reefs.
Bayu Lestari Resort, Pulau Besar
Pulau Besar, one of the larger islands off the coast of Mersing, is home to several charming resorts set against white sandy beaches and swaying coconut trees. Among them, Bayu Lestari Resort stands out for its peaceful ambiance and heartfelt hospitality.

Visitors can explore the island on bicycles along a scenic cycling path that runs parallel to the east coast beach, offering stunning sea views and gentle breezes. The resort’s traditional wooden villas, each thoughtfully designed, exude rustic charm and tranquillity, perfect for holidaymakers seeking a slower, more authentic island pace.

This family-owned resort, lovingly managed by Ibu Rose and her five children, is known not only for its warmth but also for its delicious traditional Malay cuisine, prepared with fresh local ingredients that celebrate the island’s flavours.
Batu-Batu Resort, Pulau Tengah
Set on the private island of Pulau Tengah, Batu-Batu Resort offers a luxurious yet sustainable getaway surrounded by untouched nature. As the only resort on the island, guests are guaranteed a sense of privacy and exclusivity, where the sound of waves replaces the rush of crowds.

The resort features a variety of accommodation options – from Ocean Villas with panoramic sea views to Beach Villas just steps from the sand, and Jungle Villas nestled amidst lush greenery. Its infinity pool overlooks the turquoise waters, creating an idyllic spot to relax after a day of adventure.

Rawa Island Resort, Pulau Rawa
Smaller in size but bursting with charm, Rawa Island Resort is a beloved private retreat known for its crystal-clear waters and relaxed, family-friendly vibe. The island is one of the few places where visitors can catch both sunrise and sunset views from different points on the island.

Rawa features two iconic water slides that launch straight from the jetty into the sea, a favourite for both kids and adults. The island can be explored on foot, by bicycle, or via short hikes, with the sunrise trail to the island’s peak offering panoramic views of the surrounding islets and the South China Sea.

Rawa also offers a stargazing platform, where the night sky unfolds in dazzling clarity. The coral reefs directly in front of the resort provide excellent snorkelling opportunities, while kayaking and paddleboarding are also available for those who like water activities.

Accommodation ranges from beachfront chalets and hillside villas to overwater bungalows, catering to different preferences while maintaining the island’s signature tropical serenity.

For travellers preferring the mainland, Kampungstay @ Teluk Buih provides a peaceful, village-style escape close to the sea, ideal for the simple enjoyment of coastal living while still being near Mersing’s jetty and town attractions.
