Ipoh’s Homely Culinary Gem: Fantasy Food & Snack

Located in a popular area of Ipoh near Elim Gospel Hall and SMJK Ave Maria Convent, Fantasy Food & Snack has been a quiet culinary gem for nearly three decades. Established in 1996, this family-run restaurant has become a comforting presence for locals who crave food that tastes like home.

As it approaches its 30th anniversary in 2026, Fantasy continues to embody the warmth of traditional family dining: hearty portions, genuine flavours, and a philosophy that food should nourish both the body and the heart.

Stepping into Fantasy Food & Snack feels like entering someone’s home rather than a restaurant. The atmosphere is relaxed and familiar, and the food carries that unmistakable “family-cooked” character: simple yet deeply satisfying.

The proprietor is known for caring as much about health and hygiene as about flavour. There’s either minimal or no MSG in the dishes, and the kitchen uses quality oil that’s changed regularly, not reused like in many commercial eateries. Even the chicken is sourced from antibiotic-free farms, ensuring that diners enjoy wholesome food prepared with integrity.

The restaurant’s menu is impressively extensive, covering both Chinese and Western favourites along with a wide variety of beverages, from soothing teas to freshly blended juices. One of the crowd-pleasers is the Apple + Orange + Pineapple juice combo – a refreshing, tangy mix that pairs perfectly with any meal.

Each dish is prepared thoughtfully rather than hurriedly, with attention given to freshness and balance. During our visit for dinner, we sampled a delightful range of dishes that reflected this dedication to honest cooking.

The Kelly Chicken Chop, one of their house favourites, was tender and golden, served with a balanced sauce that elevated its savoury notes. The Mee Suo Ko, a Teochew noodle dish that’s rarely found in Ipoh’s largely Cantonese food scene, was a standout, offering a comforting broth with silky noodles and a nostalgic depth of flavour.

Equally impressive was the Chew Zhou Fish Meehoon Soup, light yet aromatic, and perfect for those who appreciate the subtleties of soupy noodles. Meanwhile, the Garlic Shredded Chicken with Rice delivered a satisfying punch of savoury aroma, while the Vinegar Pig’s Trotter Rice showcased Fantasy’s thoughtful touch, cooked with Gula Melaka (palm sugar) instead of the common brown sugar, giving the dish a rich, caramel-like sweetness that beautifully complemented the tang of the vinegar.

To add variety, the Honey Chicken Wings and Thai Sauce Jelly Fish brought bursts of flavour that balanced the meal’s heartier elements.

We wrapped up our meal with the Summer Delight, a simple yet refreshing ice cream dessert that felt like the perfect finale after a fulfilling spread. Every dish we tried reflected the restaurant’s core values of quality, cleanliness and authenticity, all delivered at a price that feels fair and reasonable.

Fantasy Food & Snack is a rare reminder of what makes a restaurant truly memorable: not just the taste, but the heart behind every dish. It’s no wonder that even after nearly 30 years, Fantasy remains a cherished dining spot for families and foodies alike, a place where genuine flavours and heartfelt values never go out of style.
