bringing 2 U events & happenings in and around Ipoh … & beyond…
Velodrome Rakyat, Ipoh, was the first velodrome built in Malaysia. Yay, a first for Malaysia. The President of the Perak Cycling Association, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Darshan Singh Gill saw the need for a velodrome in the country, so that track cyclists need not be sent to neighbouring countries to train.
With the green light from HRH Sultan Azlan Shah, Sultan of Perak, Darshan Singh led a nationwide public donation campaign and raised RM3.25 million. This is the reason the velodrome is named “the people’s velodrome”.
Darshan Singh is known as the ‘Father’ of the 250-metre timber track, which already hosted numerous national and international cycling tournaments.
