Tong Tien Koon Temple Celebrates Nine Emperor Gods Festival

As the only other temple in Ipoh that alternates with Tow Boh Keong to conduct the Nine Emperor Gods procession, Tong Tien Koon Temple in Pasir Pinji attracts a fair crowd of devotees during the Nine Emperor Gods Festival.

Although most of the Taoist devotees are from communities around Pasir Pinji such as Pasir Putih, Pengkalan, Gunung Rapat, Taman SPPK and Bukit Merah, some would take the trouble to travel from outstation as well, to Tong Tien Koon Temple to pay homage to the Nine Emperor Gods.

The first day of the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, which begins on the first day of the ninth Chinese lunar month fell on Sept. 24 this year. However, the preparation and observation of vegetarian diet already started on the eve of the Festival.

6. main altar of the temple - the Supreme August Jade Emperor (God of Heaven) is in the centre, with other high ranked Taoist deities. In front of the main altar are newly installed Legendary Nine Celestial Masters (9 See Kung) originated from Fujian Province, China.

This year’s religious street procession, which is always held on Sunday morning, was organised by Tong Tien Koon by virtue of the police permit being approved to them. Next year, it will be the turn of Tow Boh Keong instead.

The temple will be conducting a fire-walking ceremony tomorrow evening beginning from 4pm. Those who would like to witness the spectacular event are encouraged to be at the temple early to stake out a good spot.

Yellow is the predominant colour as it is the royal colour. Therefore, you would notice that almost everything is yellow or golden, including joss-sticks, candles, talismans, robes, ornate chairs and sedans.
