Having an afternoon tea break is very common in Malaysia, but it is usually over chakoi or Nyonya kuih. We eat throughout the day, after all, as food unites us.
Today, I shall interest you in the idea of an exquisite Western-style afternoon tea set, infused with local taste. This is a three-tier set, with the following items:
Tier 1 (bottom):
Coffee cheese cake
Fresh raspberry mousse
Durian meringue tart
Lemon curd eclair
Salted egg macaron
Tier 2 (centre)
Lamb rendang with mashed potatoes
Tier 3 (top)
Smoked salmon brioche
Multigrain egg mayo
Tuna finger sandwich
Warm savouries to go with the set are scones (plain & raisin) with strawberry jam and clotted cream. In addition, complementing this set is a choice of soothing tea and aromatic coffee.
Tea selections include: English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Jasmine, Chamomile as well as Peppermint. For coffee, there’s Decaffeinated, Freshly brewed, Espresso, Cappuccino and Latte. Just take your pick.
Looking at the menu, can you figure out why I said that it has been localised to suit Malaysian taste buds? With the inclusion of durian, salted egg and fish cake, you know that the chef keeps Malaysian taste buds in mind.
Indulging in such an afternoon tea break is luxurious, especially in the right company. Imagine yourself savouring this variety of fresh pastries, dainty sandwiches, renowned scones, delightful cakes, colourful macarons and more… as you wash them down with hot premium tea or coffee, and while away some time on a lazy afternoon with a loved one. Ah, memories are made of this!
