Sea Lion Firefly Concept Hotel, Kuala Selangor

Firefly is a major attraction in Kuala Selangor. If you check in at Sea Lion Firefly Concept Hotel, you don’t have to go out to the river in the evening. This is because the fireflies come to you, any time you want them to!

Well, basically this is the idea behind the concept of this particular Sea Lion Hotel in Kuala Selangor. Small LED lights are projected on the ceiling of guests rooms, making it appear as if there are hundreds of fireflies in the dark room. The lights change from white to red and green, like real insects.

If you are like tennis legend Pete Sampras who can’t fall asleep with the tiniest of lights in the room, don’t worry! These LED lights can be turned on or off via a switch, so you can have the fireflies accompany you into the night, or not.

By the way, do you know that there are other Sea Lion properties as well? There’s one is Klang and three in Pulau Ketam! Ah, ha! Yes, the Hotel Sea Lion in Pulau Ketam that I wrote about earlier is owned by the same family.

Sea Lion Firefly Concept Hotel was opened for business in November 2014. The façade of this building may look modest but it boasts nine categories of rooms: Firefly Couple Terrace, Firefly Deluxe Queen, Firefly Deluxe Twin, Firefly Family Pool Access, Firefly Family Terrace, Firefly Quadruple, Firefly Triple, Single, and Standard.

The room categories are pretty descriptive. I was allocated the Firefly Couple Terrace. It provided a King bed plus a balcony (or terrace) that looks out to the street.

As this is a couple room, I noticed the setting to be on the ‘romantic’ side with dim lights, and glass panelled washroom fitted with a hot tub (but for one person). The glass door is lockable from the inside and you can also draw the thick curtain for privacy. The wash basin, though, is on the outside of the washroom, in its own little corner.

The Firefly Family Pool Access means that guests can enter the pool directly from their room. If you think that the swimming pool is too small, don’t scoff at its size. It’s just right for non-swimmers like me – we won’t be afraid of drowning.

In-room facilities include complimentary WiFi, television, hair dryer, telephone, toiletries, coffee and tea making set PLUS Maggi Cup Noodles. As you know, I’ve stayed at many different hotels but can’t remember one that provides cup noodles for free.

One more thing I enjoyed about my stay at Sea Lion Firefly Concept Hotel in Kuala Selangor was that breakfast was served to my room every morning, at the time that I stipulated.

The hotel provides Western or local breakfast. Apparently, their menu is rather limited and they serve whatever they have. Since I have no special dietary request or preference, I just allowed them to surprise me. And what a pleasant breakfast I had for the two mornings I was there!

Would I recommend Sea Lion Hotel in Kuala Selangor to my friends? A resounding yes. Firefly concept aside, this is a comfortable hotel with attentive service crew. Guests who are seeking a short few hours of rest are also welcome to check in.

I wished I had more time to spend here. I would have taken up their facial spa service. It is provided by a third-party therapist who visits the hotel by appointment. Besides facial spa, other services that she offers include manicure and eyelash extension, at a reasonable price.
