Rebranding of Ipoh Car-Free Day to Ipoh Low Carbon Day
The Ipoh Car-Free Day programme, which was previously hosted along Jalan Raja DiHilir, has won the Platinum Placemaking Award by the Malaysian Institute of Planners under Street Category (Utilisation During Events).
Ipoh Car-Free Day first began on 18th October 2015. It was relocated to Jalan Sultan Abdul Jalil (Dataran Bandaraya) on 22nd December 2019. The event was initially established as an awareness measure and initiative to reduce the intensity of carbon emissions collectively in Ipoh, and in line with the country’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030.
During the tenure of Ipoh City Mayor Y.Bhg. Dato’ Rumaizi Bin Baharin @Md.Daud, Ipoh Car-Free Day has been rebranded to Ipoh Low Carbon Day in the July 2023 edition.
This Ipoh Low Carbon Day event has benefitted all Ipohites, regardless government or non-government agencies, families or individuals who attend and participate in activities during the monthly programme, when the streets are closed to traffic. Among the activities held are jogging, cycling, walking, rollerblading, skateboarding, aerobics, health check-ups, health awareness campaigns, humanitarian campaigns, 3R campaigns plus any suitable activity that meets the challenge of achieving the Sustainability Aspiration of a Zero Carbon City 2050 as the goal and direction for Ipoh Low Carbon Day. This is with the objective of making Ipoh a Green, Smart, Liveable, Resilient, and Sustainable City by Year 2030.
Ipoh Low Carbon Day is held on the last Sunday of the month. One of this morning’s highlights is a fun biking event. Known as the Visit Ipoh 2023 Bike Ride, 250 enthusiasts participated in the 10km route. It was organised in parallel with a 5km running event by the National Security Council (MKN). The NATSEC Fun Run attracted 300 entries.
Flag off for the cycling and running events were by Ipoh City Mayor Y.Bhg. Dato’ Rumaizi Bin Baharin@Md. Daud and Tuan Khairul Amir bin Jamil (Assistant Director of National Security for Perak).
