Press Conference: 2015 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup
The 24th edition of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, 9th as a permanent annual fixture in Ipoh since 2007, kicks off today with an opening match between Australia versus Canada.
Australia are eight-time champion at this prestigious men’s field hockey tournament but Canada are no stranger too, although the weather is a challenge for the North Americans.
Other teams playing are New Zealand, Korea, India and of course, host country, Malaysia.
Except for South Korea, all teams have sent their first-liners, using this tournament to prepare for the World League 3, as games here will be played in the new four-quarter format.
Malaysia have been given the target of a final, which seems like a long shot to me in view of the keen competition. Australia have to live up to their star billing, New Zealand have been pressured by their government to perform, India have a new coach in Paul van Ass and may be showing a new game, etc.
Whatever the case, hockey fans in Ipoh, and around the world lucky enough to have live telecast of the games on TV, will be in for a treat.
