Pre-Event: The Ipoh Depressed Cake Shop 2014
Come Jan 12, The Depressed Cake Shop will be coming to Ipoh to set up shop at Burps & Giggles, following the success of the Malaysian chapter’s debut effort in Kuala Lumpur in September 2013, which raised RM18,000, not only through the sale of cakes but also cash donations from well-wishers.
Originally created in the United Kingdom, The Depressed Cake Shop’s objective is to raise awareness and generate discussion about mental health issues, to end discrimination and challenging the stigma attached to mentally ill patients.
The orgnisers decided to make Ipoh their next stop because Ipoh is a city known for its foodie delights, and because of Ipoh’s world-class mental institution in Tanjung Rambutan.
At the bake sale, grey-coloured, or even black, cakes, cookies, confections and sweet treats will be put up for sale to the public. Monies raised will be channelled to Ipoh Befrienders and Perak Palliative Care Society, two organisations that work closely with people with depression or who may be affected by other mental health issues.
In conjunction with the event, bakers are encouraged to participate in a competition for the most original Depressed Cake, at RM10 per entry. Bakers can also contribute their cakes for the bake sale. Children too stand to win great prizes in the “Paint a Sad Face” art competition.
