Oyster Mushroom Cultivation @ Ever Fresh Mushroom
Staying at EFM Mini Rest House offers guests the opportunity to check out the cultivation process of oyster mushrooms, although one doesn’t need to be a guest to take a study tour of the farm.
During my visit, the owner’s wife, Madam Chin kindly took me around to show me how oyster mushrooms are cultivated. The process sounds rather complex although it is not. Just think about mushrooms as fungi.
I found a good explanation on the internet so it saves me from having to explain it. It is not a hundred percent, but here you go: How to Grow Oyster Mushroom Spawn (Low Tech).
The business began 18 years ago when Madam Chin’s brother-in-law returned from Taiwan after his studies and decided to venture into oyster mushroom cultivation. Madam Chin and her husband, Jimmy Chee, who had helped with the business, took over it in due course and have been managing it since then.
According to her, they can produce an average of 20 kilogrammes of mushrooms per day. Mushrooms produced here are supplied to the neighbourhood Gunung Rapat wet market and chain hypermarkets.
Have a look at my photos from the modest Ever Fresh Mushroom oyster mushroom farm. Also, do have a look at EFM Nature Homestay – Mini Rest House in Gunung Rapat, Ipoh located at the farm.

Unlike white button mushroom, the oyster mushroom fruit bodies can be easily dried and stored. Dried oyster mushrooms can be instantly used after soaking in hot water for 5 to 10 minutes or it can be used in powdered form for several preparations. Fresh mushrooms have a shelf life of 24-48 h even at room temperature.
Yes I have visited the farm before, its quite educational.
