Kimberley Hotel, George Town, Penang
Located on the fringe of George Town, Penang’s famed UNESCO World Heritage Site Buffer Zone, just down the main thoroughfare from KOMTAR Tower, is Kimberley Hotel. KOMTAR is an acronym for Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak, named after the second Prime Minister of Malaysia.
The well-maintained whitewashed heritage building with bright lights shining from the lobby definitely attracts much attention. Nevertheless, a visitor could easily miss its entrance, as it is located by the side of the building, facing Auction Rooms Café, an adjacent building, also a sister property of Kimberley Hotel.
The refurbished pre-war structure has a modern charm to it, whereby all 117 rooms and suites across four floors are elegantly appointed.
Standard room or suite amenities include a safety box, mini bar, tea and coffee making facilities, bedroom slippers, ironing board, clothes hangers, as well as a hair dryer, which is available upon request.
Kimberley Hotel’s most popular room category is Kimberley Queen, its entry-level category.
A tad modest in space, it does the trick of providing comfort to guests who seek a good night’s rest after a long day exploring George Town and the greater area of Penang Island.
Guests who are willing to pay slightly extra can enjoy a larger space making accommodation more comfortable in Wellesley and Raffles Suites.
In fact, Raffles is possibly the only suites in Penang which can accommodate four pax. They are ideal for families.
Both Wellesley and Raffles Suites come with their own private balcony, perfect for couples who prefer some quiet time over a drink as they enjoy a view of George Town.
Kimberley Hotel’s best kept secret is possibly its Sky Bar, a new social venue that is large enough to host modest gatherings, such as cocktails and private parties.
As mentioned earlier, Auction Rooms Café is a sister company. Therefore, guests are welcomed with a complimentary drink at the café from 3pm until 6pm, upon checking in.
Complimentary breakfast is also served at Auction Rooms Café for rooms that come with it.
Although Kimberley Hotel doesn’t come with much frills, it is a hotel that serves tourists to the island very well, and it is not only because of its extremely strategic location.
Car park is available to guests, albeit in limited lots, at the back of the hotel building.

Its been so long since i visited penang even i stay only 45 mins away. Will definitely check this hotel.
Haven’t visit this hotel yet. Seem not bad to give it a try.
When I visit new places modern hotels are great to stay at, however, they lack the history and the story that come with the location. Kimberley seems to have both the modern decor and the great history to accompany its guests.
I have plans in going to Penang next year and will consider Kimberley Hotel a place to stay.
Thanks for the info
The place looks clean and neat. I also love the minimalist design. Will definitely check this out when we visit Malaysia.
