What began as a simple idea to enliven the dirty walls of shop houses along the back lanes of Old Town in Ipoh, inspired by Ernest Zacharevic’s work in Penang, has now evolved to be a new destination for city tourists to Ipoh.

Eric Lai’s “art lane” stretching the whole of Lorong Panglima, which he and his art students painted over the past two years with colourful murals that depict the many cultural and traditional aspects of Malaysian life, was launched last Sunday as Ipoh’s Mural Arts Lane.

Naturally, with its new status, there are even more murals now, plus the number of artists involved in the redecoration of the back lane has expanded to involve art students in the institutions of higher learning in Perak.
