Ipoh: Street, Sleek & Funky – A Musical

The lively musical, Ipoh: Street, Sleek & Funky, successfully recaptured the essence of Ipoh’s good ol’ days, where children played in the street with their friends until sun down, and their parents did not have to worry about them.

“Ipoh: Street, Sleek & Funky” tells of a time when families lived above their quaint colonial shop houses where they ran their businesses on the ground floor. Ipoh has always been well known for cultivating lifelong friendships.

“This city is where Ipohites still come home to revisit year after year bringing with them warm memories even though they have grown old and grey, having settled down with their family far away.”

This musical brings to life the colourful street murals that are beautifully painted on the walls of many old shop houses and back streets around Ipoh by local artist, Eric Lai.

Amidst all the happy-go-lucky scenes of song and dance was intertwined a story-line with an even stronger message of chasing one’s dreams, and in this case, Swee Lin’s dream of becoming a world-renowned ballerina, against her father’s wishes.

Swee Lin’s best friend, Ah Leong, came up with plans to make Miner Lee change his mind but it had to take the effort of the entire neighbourhood to make him reconsider his decision to allow Swee Lin one last dance before relinquishing her dream.

This musical is a collaborative effort of performing arts educators, artistes and talents to create a production which speaks through drama, dance and music by Ipoh-born classical pianist, Lynn Yew Ever, including her award-winning piece, Without Words.

This special musical, which ran for two days, was a collaboration between The Perak Society of Performing Arts (PSPA) and Jabatan Kebudayaan Kesenian Negara Perak (JKKN). Those who wish to explore the world of performing arts could contact PSPA or JKKN directly.
