Ipoh International Choir Exchange 2024
The Ipoh International Choir Exchange 2024 unfolded at SMJK Sam Tet Ipoh, uniting diverse choral ensembles in an evening filled with harmonious performances.
Organised by the Perak Society of Performing Arts with the support of the Young Choral Academy, the participating choirs were the A.M.C Ladies Chorus, the highly acclaimed KGBL Chamber Choir from Slovenia, and the host Sam Tet Voices.
Gracing the event were the President of Perak Society of Performing Arts (PSPA) Datin Rosalina Ooi; Principal of SMJK Sam Tet Ipoh Mr Chan Kok Wai; Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association of SMJK Sam Tet Ipoh Mr Sam Mah Kheong Sum; and Penolong Pengarah Unit Pembangunan Bakat Murid, JPN Perak, En Wan Muhammad Huzairi Bin Shukri (affectionately known as En Wan Z).
Esteemed guests included the vocal coach of the KGBL Chamber Choir Ms Ebita, and conductor Mr Ambrož Čopi.
Other attendees were parents, teachers, fellow students, and friends to enjoy the evening’s performances.
The exchange commenced with a stirring presentation by the A.M.C Ladies Chorus, directed by student conductors Lee Wen Ka, followed by Kew Yan Yi. Accompanied on piano by Chan Shan May, the choir rendered “Dirgahayu Tanahairku” and “Hoore Hoore!” setting a joyful mood for the event.
Next, Sam Tet Voices took centre stage, delivering a captivating trio of songs: “Hujan,” “Bangau oh Bangau,” and “Starry Messenger.” Under the guidance of conductor Tsia Kayshern and accompanied by pianist Mr Joshua Ng, the boys’ choir left a lasting impression.
A special moment came when Sam Tet Voices and the A.M.C Ladies Chorus collaborated on the uplifting “Carry The Light,” blending their voices in a stunning harmony of male and female vocals, creating a mesmerising and memorable performance, under conductor Terence Au, who is also the vocal coach for the two choirs.
The evening reached new heights as the KGBL Chamber Choir from Slovenia took the stage. Conducted by the notable Mr Ambrož Čopi, the choir impressed with a sophisticated and varied programme, showcasing their international calibre. Their brilliant execution of diverse musical styles brought a touch of European elegance to the exchange and captivated the audience.
Their songlist included Laudate dominum, Cicle Pomiluy mya, Soleil, Pesem od zarje, Sine sole nihil sum, Arise my beautiful one, and Visoki rej.
The grand finale was a thrilling culmination, with all three choirs – A.M.C Ladies Chorus, Sam Tet Voices, and KGBL Chamber Choir – joining together for two beloved Malaysian folk songs, “Wau Bulan” conducted by Mr Terence Au and “Rasa Sayang” by Mr Ambrož Čopi.
Despite only two hours of rehearsal, their collaborative performance was flawless, highlighting the powerful unity that music can create. The blend of voices from Malaysia and Slovenia resonated beautifully, showcasing the magic of cultural and musical exchange.
As the jubilant event concluded, Datin Rosalina expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the performers, organisers, and supporters. A token of appreciation was presented to the KGBL Chamber Choir by Sam Tet Voices, followed by gifts for the choir leaders and the dignitaries in attendance.
