Come September 18 and 19, the ballroom of Ritz Garden Hotel Ipoh will be transformed into a 700-seater theatre for the presentation of Wild Wild Rose: The Musical.
Brought to us by Spring Time Group Limited and Perry Chiu Experimental Theatre directly from Hong Kong, Wild Wild Rose will be making stops at Kuala Lumpur (Sept. 12) and Penang (Sept. 15 & 16) before arriving in Ipoh for two evenings.
This musical will be in Cantonese (with Mandarin subtitles) while songs to be sung in Mandarin. There will be about twenty songs, accompanied by a good range of dance routines, from Cha Cha to Twist, Ballroom, Flamenco and even a Japanese dance.
Based on the over 100-year popular opera, Carmen, which was adapted into a movie in Hong Kong in the 1960s, the story was turned into a musical since seven years ago.
To date, Wild Wild Rose: The Musical has already been shown in Hong Kong, Singapore and on SuperStar Virgo Hong Kong, over forty times and thus far has entertained some 30,000 audiences.
This September, for the first time in Malaysia, local theatre lovers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in this romantic tragedy.
Featuring a 1960s setting, it tells the story of a nightclub singer, played by Perry Chiu Woon, who made a bet with her friends that she could make a piano teacher, played by Zac Koo Ho Ching, fall for her within ten days.
Unbeknownst to her, the piano teacher, who is engaged to be married, had already fallen in love with her. He was intrigued by her as he had never met someone like her before. Little did she know that what began as a game to her turned serious when she reciprocated his feelings.
However, the storyline isn’t as straightforward as it seems. The double love triangle turned tragic in the end. How would the outcome of this obsessive love be? Your guess is as good as mine!
Fans of theatre productions would probably remember Spring Time Group Limited as they brought to us “Shooting Star” in April, which was exceptionally well-received by local audiences. Wild Wild Rose: The Musical will be their second production in Ipoh.
Even if one had already watched Wild Wild Rose: The Musical, producer Clifton Ko Chi Sum has promised that these Malaysian shows will be different as a lot of new projections have been included.
This is because following these Malaysian dates, the show will be brought to Shenzen for an Arts Festival. There are plans to tour China after that.
Wild Wild Rose: The Musical is the company’s most successful show so far. Those who love the arts should not miss this. Theatre performances are as real as one could get as there are no second takes.
A high level of skills is required from the actors, particularly in a musical. Wild Wild Rose: The Musical will feature six main stars, led by Perry Chiu Woon and Zac Koo Ho Ching.
They are supported by about twenty crew members, all flown in from Hong Kong, so we can expect a top notch performance.
