The first match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2013 men’s international invitational field hockey tournament where Pakistan was scheduled to meet defending champions, New Zealand, was delayed for some thirty minutes due to a freak storm.
However, adverse weather conditions failed to damper Pakistan’s spirit, who put up a strong performance right from the start. On the other hand, I felt that New Zealand’s slow start cost them the match, as it was too little too late even though they picked up their game during the second half.
New Zealand, although a surprise champion last year, beating Argentina 1 – 0, has quite a few young members this year as some of their key players are currently in Europe to fulfil their playing commitments. This ongoing European hockey calendar is also the reason some countries were unable to accept the organiser’s invitation to play at this year’s tournament.
The final score was Pakistan 4, New Zealand 3. View (and buy) high quality photos of this match at Sports Media Group Australia. Also, read the technical report of this game at the official website of Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.
