Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery, Klang
The Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery (Galeri Diraja Sultan Abdul Aziz) is housed in a 1909 classic colonial building in Klang, the Sultan Suleiman Building, known locally as the ‘White House of Selangor’. Opened to the public in late 2007, the gallery is the brainchild of current Sultan of Selangor, HRH Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah dedicated to and in honour of his father, the late HRH Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah.
The late HRH Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah was the eleventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia and eighth Sultan of Selangor. He ruled Selangor for a total of 41 years, from 1960 to 2001, and was Malaysia’s oldest ruler when he was elected as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. He was the Paramount ruler for 2.5 years from 1999 to 2001.
At the Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery, visitors get an insight of the life and times of the late HRH Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, from his early childhood, to his days as a crown prince, career in the military, life in public offices and his appointment as the Sultan of Selangor.
During his reign as the Sultan, he relinquished his land to the Federal Government to develop the capital city we now know as Kuala Lumpur. As the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, something similar happened and that was how Putrajaya was born. It is now the administrative centre of Malaysia. All these are recorded in the Royal Gallery.
The Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery has seven halls, with each hall holding personal collections, gifts, memorabilia and artifacts from different eras of the late Sultan’s life, until his demise. Every single item in the Royal Gallery is authentic, except for the Royal crown jewels, which are replicas, the reason being that the management is unable to fulfil the requirement set by the royal household to have two 24-hour police guards, despite the casings are bullet-proof already.
Like most museums and art galleries, photography and videography are not allowed. In special cases where these are allowed, flash isn’t allowed to be used as the heat from these devices could affect the exhibits.
In any case, it is always better to go personally for an insight into Selangor’s unique royal heritage and the rich legacy of the late HRH Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah.
