RM10K Raised by KL Sings for PWW Society

About 30 members of a community choir under KL Sings, who collectively go by the name ‘VoxPop Choir’, together with their choirmistress Cheryl Teh, came to Ipoh yesterday for a Chari-Tea Party in support of the Perak Women for Women (PWW) Society.

The entourage was also joined by about ten of Cheryl’s friends, who also supported the cause. PJ-based KL Sings was established in 2011 by Cheryl. However, it was only in 2019 that more activities were organised for members, following her retirement from The Philharmonic Society of Selangor as Choir Director.

With the belief that everybody can sing and should sing, KL Sings welcomes everyone, irrespective of experience or musical background. As it is, KL Sings has about a hundred singers, with an average age of 60 years. Classes are conducted once a week, two hours per session. Besides stress-free singing, there are other activities lined up that keep the members active and occupied.

Said Cheryl, “Singing is a healthy form of exercise. It proved to be very important during the pandemic as we were all locked down. We had Zoom meet-ups to practise our singing; basically, be there for one another.”

As Cheryl celebrated her birthday in May, she came up with the idea to raise funds for PWW again, her fourth charity project for the non-profit organisation in Ipoh. Her support for PWW went as far back as 2018, beginning with the “One Million Stars to End Violence”, a community-based project led by PWW and Soroptimist Ipoh.

In Ipoh for Chari-Tea Party, with Cheryl on the keyboard, the choir sang popular songs, opening the event with Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Guests were encouraged to participate, as each person was provided with a booklet of lyrics. Interspersed with the singalong were lucky draws with attractive bags, tiffins, and accessories given away as prizes.
