Public Awareness: Basic Self-Defence Programme @ Petaling Jaya

With the rise of crime on the streets, it is a smart move to equip ourselves with some basic self-defence moves.

Irrespective of gender, we really should know a chop or two which could mean life and death at that crucial split second.

In a bid to raise this public awareness, MBPJ Councillor Derek Fernandez organised a basic self-defence programme for adults and children, a community project in Petaling Jaya last Sunday.

The four-hour session was conducted by Grandmaster Yeow Cheng Watt, 9th Degree Black Belt of CW Yeow Traditional Taekwon-Do Academy, and assisted by his students. It attracted almost fifty participants of all age groups, residents of Petaling Jaya.

From the participants’ response, all were willing to learn and pick up some self-defence techniques, as they went hands-on, guided by Taekwon-do instructors.

Self-protection is like an umbrella. It’s good to have it with us at all times; hopefully we don’t have to use it.

Besides MBPJ Councillor Derek Fernandez, present to address the participants were Dato’ Shahnaz Azmi of Malaysian ITF Taekwon-Do Federation and DSP Chan Mei Ling of Polis Diraja Malaysia (Royal Malaysian Police).
