Muhammadiah Chinese Mosque (Masjid Muhammadiah)
Although the Muhammadiah Chinese Mosque is still being given its finishing touches, the mosque, known simply as “Chinese Muslim Mosque” (Masjid Cina), has fast become a tourist attraction.
Opened on Aug 3rd, just days before Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the mosque is expected to complete by the end of September, after 22 months of building works, at a cost of RM4 million. Situated on a land size of almost one acre just behind Medan Selera Tasek, the mosque spots 100% Chinese architectural design, with the roof imported from China.
While this Muhammadiah Chinese Mosque may not be the first Chinese Muslim mosque in the country, it is the first with total Chinese architecture. The first Chinese Muslim mosque is in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, but the Beijing Mosque has Siamese influence. Another Chinese Muslim mosque currently being built is in Malacca.
With a capacity of 1,000 worshippers, this mosque is open to the public for viewing, irrespective of race and religion. However, rules of the mosque have to be adhered to, including wearing a headscarf if one wishes to enter the main prayer hall.
