Dining at Potpourri House Café, Ipoh
My family and I had lunch at Potpourri House yesterday, a café that spots an English cottage concept. This Western café was launched in May, 2014 but was already opened for business in time for the grand opening of Adonis Bridal Manoir.
Both Adonis Bridal and Potpourri House Café are located within the same colonial-styled building just behind Heritage Hotel in Ipoh. I must say, this pink/white café is one of the cutest and definitely on my list of top ten Instagram cafés in Ipoh.
With the motto “Craving for love”, Potpourri House Café is helmed by self-taught chef, Henry Choong and assisted by his lovely wife Angie and children. This pork-free café serves mainly Western cuisine, with a matching English theme to bring out the essence of the dishes.
What’s interesting about Chef Henry, who is known as Master Henry on Facebook, is that he’s an Oriental cook by training some thirty years ago, even though most of us in Ipoh know him as the owner of a chain of bridal houses, which has been handed over to his children to manage, while he pursues his love for culinary arts.
His passion has driven him to experiment with Western dishes, thus, at Potpourri House Café, Master Henry has incorporated his Oriental style of cooking into Western recipes, creating a new taste that suits the local palate and at the same time, with price tags that are friendly to local pockets.
In fact, Master Henry has created more than twenty different dishes that are served here, and offers a new dish every other month, to keep the menu fresh and updated.
Potpourri House Café serves brunch, lunch, hi-tea and dinner. The café is also available for booking for annual dinners, corporate and private functions as well as events. It actually complements Adonis Bridal, the perfect venue for a garden wedding in Ipoh, with a buffet meal for guests.
Soon to be implemented is a greenhouse garden restaurant that can accommodate 500 guests at a time, another new dining concept in town. At the moment, the café can cater to 80 pax indoors and 1200 pax outdoors.
The food photos I have shared today are signature dishes from the à la carte lunch menu. Add RM5+ for a soup, lemon tea or lemon juice and a scoop of ice cream. This lunch promotion is only available on weekdays, except public holidays. The café also serves alcoholic drinks such as wine, beer, whiskey and champagne.
If you would like to learn how to cook, follow Master Henry’s Facebook page where he generously shares cooking tips via a series of videos.
