Ipohites! Your call for a bookstore that stands out, one that sells a wide genre without costing a bomb, or without having to wait for the Big Bad Wolf Sale, has been answered, with the opening of BookXcess yesterday at Kong Heng Square.

Oh, how we book lovers in this city have been envious of Kuala Lumpur for enjoying the biggest bookstore in Malaysia that is open 24 hours a day, or of Penang with its bookstore that boasts the longest bookshelf!

Ipoh now has a similarly Instagrammable bookstore with the arrival of BookXcess, that has converted a former bank (United Asian Bank or UAB), safe deposit boxes, vaults and all, into a bookstore that not only offers affordable books at 50% – 80% off recommended retail price, but also a unique experience to boot.

Don’t judge a book by its cover, as the saying goes, and it holds true for BookXcess Kong Heng Ipoh, with its unassuming storefront.

Yes, the volume of books is impressive, the availability of Augmented Reality (AR) books is revolutionary, but the look and feel of an actual bank that has been maintained in its original condition as best as possible is one of a kind.

“It is such an honour to be part of Ipoh’s rich history and beautiful architecture. With the opening of BookXcess Kong Heng, we hope to meet the demand for affordable books here in the Silver State. Based on our past experiences when we organised the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale in Ipoh, many of our customers requested for us to set up a permanent store, so here we are,” shared Andrew Yap, founder of BookXcess and the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale.

The Yasmin at Kong Heng Museum (now newseum) has also been moved from Level 2 to basement, where the bank vaults are, to give it more exposure. You can read about my post on Yasmin at Kong Heng at this link. Something new would be Yasmin’s original Mac desktop on display, whereby visitors are encouraged to delve into Yasmin’s mind through her unpublished works still stored in her computer.
