Trying Out Uber in Ipoh

I took my first Uber ride in Ipoh some weeks ago to try out the system. My trip was from Impiana Hotel Ipoh to Home. As soon as I placed my request, my Uber driver called me up to confirm if I really did book a Uber and asked me for my location. I said yes, I did request for a ride and that I am at Impiana Hotel Ipoh. He didn’t know where that is and said that if the GPS has accurately marked my location, he would be able to locate me.

The driver arrived a few minutes later and I actually could see his car icon on my Uber app turning in to the hotel. I chatted with him and asked him if he is not from Ipoh, since he doesn’t know Impiana Hotel. Turned out that he lives in Tanjung Tualang and comes to Ipoh daily. He said that if I had told him the nearest landmark, he would have found it easily. Well, Impiana Hotel is already a major landmark, where else did he want me to say?

Anyway, since he wasn’t local, I had to point him the way to my home, which I took a shortcut rather than depended on the GPS of the application which would take us on a roundabout way. During the trip, he got so friendly that he even asked me why I was at the hotel. Like, duh!

From my screenshots, you can see that it is very easy to use Uber, but you do need to have internet connection on your phone in order for it to work. And I just want to point out that my Uber driver looked nothing like the photo he had uploaded onto his profile. This discrepancy has been detected by a few of my other friends during their Uber rides too. I think Uber has to be more stringent with driver profiles.

As soon as the driver keys in that he has dropped off his rider, my fare was deducted from my credit card, which I had pre-entered into my application. A receipt was also generated and sent to me by email. It was all very seamless.

By the way, according to my driver, it is better to opt for payment by credit card as it is charged according to the fare. If one were to pay by cash, the amount is rounded up to the higher Ringgit.

  1. I’ve used uber here in KL too and definitely one of the more convenient transportation mode. I do have to agree with you with more stringent uber driver selection

  2. WOW! Great news for Ipoh lang and fellow travelers too, no need to pay fixed price taxi already since there is Uber. Hope they will expand to Melaka too

  3. i love Uber, save me a lot of trouble all the time and super convenient, it’ll be nice when it covers whole Malaysia too

  4. I haven’t tried any of the car services as my friends are always so nice to pick me up. I heard the service is good and I do agree with you that the picture of the driver should match!

  5. Thank Emily,

What about Grab? We communicated before last year asking about moving around within Ipoh. This time we (5 of us) are passing by Ipoh enroute to Sungai Siput on Mid Mar/16.

We are using YoYo bus from KLIA to Ipoh (AMANJAYA) and need reliable transport straight to Sungai Siput the same day. Any recommendation?

  6. Grab is not available in Ipoh yet. You can probably take the taxi to Sungai Siput from Terminal Amanjaya. Won’t be cheap but there’s five of you.

  7. Hi Emily,
Thanks for the info so far.
We’re arriving at Ipoh airport in about 2 weeks time.
Can’t decide whether to take the coach/bus at amanjaya bus terminal to Cameron highlands or hire a private car like uber?
Read that the schedules for the buses are irregular even if they say 10am departure but the buses came in 1-2 hrs later.
Also, can I ask if I can buy the bus tickets from the bus terminal or only can buy online?
    Appreciate your asap reply.
Or can you provide any reliable n safe transportation.
    Thanks alot
