At the Kuan Ti Temple in Kanthan, Perak, yesterday morning, 34 teenagers of Teochew descent took part in a special coming-of-age ceremony. This traditional event, important to the Teochew community, marked the moment when these young people officially became adults.

The teenagers, aged 12 to 17, went through a series of rituals that have been practised for many years. In ancient China, completing this ceremony meant that a child was now considered an adult, ready to take on new responsibilities, including marriage.

One important part of the ceremony was showing respect to their parents. Each teenager knelt in front of their parents and offered them tea as a sign of love and gratitude. This act, known as filial piety, is a key value in Chinese culture and reminds everyone of the strong bond between parents and children.

The ceremony started with a lively drum performance by the SMJK Shing Chung Sungai Siput Festive Drum Team. The sound of the drums filled the temple, bringing excitement to the day’s celebrations.

To add to the festive mood, more than ten cultural vendors set up stalls to sell traditional arts and crafts. Visitors had the chance to buy these items and enjoy a deeper connection to Teochew culture.

The teenagers and their families also prayed to the temple deities, thanking them for keeping the children safe during their childhood years. This part of the ceremony showed the spiritual side of the event, recognising the help and protection provided by the gods.

The coming-of-age ceremony at the Kuan Ti Temple was a meaningful event for the 34 teenagers and their parents. It was a day to celebrate their journey from childhood to adulthood, honouring the traditions and values passed down by their Teochew ancestors.

Teochew Coming of Age Ritual

As the 7th lunar month came to an end, the Bercham Da Di Gong temple in Bercham (巴占大帝宫) marked the close of the Hungry Ghost Festival with a special street procession.

The King of Hades was represented by a large effigy, which was carried through the streets of Bercham. The purpose of this journey was to remind the wandering spirits that their time on earth was over and that they needed to return to the afterlife.

For two hours, the procession moved through the Bercham neighbourhood, with the sounds of drums and cymbals echoing through the streets. When the procession returned to the temple, the final part of the ceremony took place.

The effigy of the King of Hades, along with paper offerings like boats and other items, was set on fire. The flames were a symbol of the King of Hades returning to the Netherworld, marking the end of the Hungry Ghost Festival.

This ritual is more than just an exciting end to the festival; it also signifies that the time when spirits roam the earth has come to an end.
