Sam Ma Chicken Rice, ‘Nuff Said

I chatted with a fellow foodie the other day about recent eateries in Ipoh. I do admit that spending so much time away from home lately, I have lost touch with its development, especially when it came to its food.

One of the spots recommended was Sam Ma Chicken Rice in Ipoh Garden South, opened 1.5 years ago, after taking over Bread Legend. I was told that it is usually packed during weekends. Therefore, I chose a non-peak day to have lunch there.

Sam Ma Chicken Rice, a Cantonese chicken rice joint, has a simple menu, with Chicken rice as its main feature. The bird can be ordered in a set, as a quarter, half or whole. Diners may also opt for Kampung chicken. These free-range birds are premium meat and slightly pricier.

Apart from ordering the chicken to be shared among guests at your table, you can also order a chicken rice set for one pax, which was what I did. The rice served at Sam Ma is garlic rice, and not the usual “oily rice” for Hainanese chicken rice.

Don’t fancy rice? Opt for chicken kuey teow. Its à la carte menu is also very basic: lettuce, bean sprouts and braised chicken feet. There’s also fish ball or meat ball. That’s it!

As for the beverages, the choices are also limited but no one cares as all go to Sam Ma for the smooth chicken, succulent bean sprouts and tender chicken feet! Mix and match these dishes to have a taste of Ipoh bean sprout chicken (tauge ayam)!

Do you think it’s strange that even people who do not eat chicken patronise Sam Ma? They are contented just eating their garlic rice with the gravy and sauces! By the way, Sam Ma chilli sauce is sold at RM10 per tin.

It is good news to the locals that Sam Ma Chicken Rice is still undiscovered by tourists at this point in time. Actually, Sam Ma does have many outstation guests who were long-time customers over almost two decades at Sam Ma’s original eatery in Melaka.
Last year, the proprietors relocated their business to Ipoh, the hometown of the lady boss.
