Ni Artweek

Appreciators of art and craft should make a visit to Abby Hotel By The River Town, Ipoh this week where a contemporary art festival is being held.

This is a seven-day event which kicked off yesterday. It features design, performance and art work by eight individual artists or groups of artists. Joining Ipoh artists are those who came all the way from Kelantan and Johor.

The third floor and rooftop of the hotel have been allocated for Ni Artweek, courtesy of the hotel owner, Mr. Liew Sun Chin.

Rooms on the third floor have been occupied by each artist(s) where they display their creativity. As this is an interactive exhibition, visitors are encouraged to explore the rooms and pose questions to the artists who are around during the stipulated time to explain their concept and vision.

Volunteers are also on hand to answer your enquiries, if there are any. If you are visiting in a large group, you may even request for a guided tour for a more detailed understanding of the exhibits.

Meanwhile, on the Rooftop is the Art Bazaar, where crafters present their work of handmade art craft and lifestyle items, which are all for sale. Visitors are of course, encouraged to support them.

Ni Artweek, a private initiative by a group of Ipoh artists, is a platform for both aspiring and established artists to showcase their creative talent to the community. As such, at the official opening ceremony last evening, one of the guests-of-honour, Ipoh City Councillor Liew Kar Tuan, donated RM500 cash to the cause.

You will notice that while I have shared many photos of Ni Artweek here, only scant information is furnished. This is because you really should head over to Abby Hotel By The River Town to explore, engage and experience Ni Artweek personally to understand the powerful message of art.

The word “Ni” actually means “you” in Chinese (你) or it could also be interpreted as rebellion (逆). In a broader context, “Ni” could also be the short form for the Malay word “ini” or in English, “this”.

Opening hours are from 4pm to 10pm daily, until 17th Dec, 2016. Admission to Ni Artweek is free-of-charge. For further information, log on to Ni Artweek official Facebook Page.
