Masjid Lapan Kubah (Masjid Russia) in Jerteh, Terengganu
Located at Kampung Lapan Kotak, Jerteh, Terengganu, catching the eye of many a passerby is a colourful mosque. The actual name of this mosque is Masjid Lapan Kubah, or mosque with eight domes. Its architecture and colours were inspired by St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, hence, this mosque is known locally as Masjid Russia.
This iconic mosque was the brainchild of Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, Besut Member of Parliament some six years ago. Built at a cost of RM4 million through public donations, it was to replace the original century-old mosque that was falling apart.
Since it was opened to worshipers in 2018 during Aidilfitri, it has attracted several scores of Muslims to pray in this mosque, including those from other states. It boasts a capacity to accommodate 500 devotees.
If you find yourself visiting the East Coast state of Terengganu, making a stop at Jerteh is indeed a good idea. This town is about 1.5 hours north of Kuala Terengganu. Whether you are a Muslim or not, do come by for a photo opportunity.
