Besides pure sales, visitors were able to get up close and personal with some of MAPS resident characters, from Mr. Peabody and Sherman to BoBoiBoy and my personal favourite, The Smurfs.

The RM450 million animation theme park is built on a 20.8 hectare site in Meru Raya, just by the North-South Expressway exit.

Touted to be an iconic landmark, it will be the catalyst needed to boost tourism in Perak and the state’s overall economy. For a start, MAPS has created 450 new job opportunities.

As it stands, Perak is the top domestic destination in Malaysia. It received the highest number of domestic tourists in the country for three consecutive years; 5.6 million in 2012, 6.01 million in 2013 and 7 million in 2014. This year’s target is 5.5 million.

MAPS, which at this point is eighty percent complete, will be opened in time for Visit Perak Year 2017. As such, the state government has set a realistic target of RM2.1 billion in tourist receipts for that year. In 2014 alone, a total of RM2 billion tourist receipts were received.
