Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta @ Tanjong Rambutan
Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta located in Tanjong Rambutan, Perak, used to be known as Federal Lunatic Asylum. Its name was then changed to Central Mental Hospital (CMH).
I decided to drop by the happy hospital the morning I visited National Stud Malaysia, just to check out how much the hospital has developed since my last visit. Boy, I couldn’t recognise anything at all. Where are the farms? Where are the fruit trees? I may have gone at the wrong time but the patients were all in their wards.
Hospital Bahagia recently celebrated its 100th year, but as the oldest and largest mental hospital in the country, residents of Tanjong Rambutan (TR) town continue to be stigmatised. To describe someone who has lost his mind, we don’t say “gone bananas” but “gone rambutan”. Funny? Only to Ipoh folks.
Photography isn’t allowed in the hospital so I only have this photo to show. It is blur as it was taken through the car windscreen. 🙁
