Ban Loong Hotel @ Ipoh Old Town
During my 5-day Penang holiday last month where I stayed at two heritage boutique hotels (Kimberley & Penaga), I couldn’t help but wonder if Ipoh has a similar type of hotel to offer – a heritage boutique hotel with character.
As someone who is frequently on the road, I have put up at many different types of accommodations, from the most basic of homestays to luxurious five-star resorts.
To me, the factors that make one trip more memorable than the other are: the people I meet, the places I visit, the food to savour, the things I get to indulge in, and of course, the hotels that I stay in.
With one trip blending into another, it is not easy to remember everything, unless it is outstanding. As for the recent Penang trip, the hotels stood out for me.
In Ipoh, we have something similar in Ban Loong Hotel. Just opened for business 1.5 months ago, this is a 102-year-old (1915) building that has seen four going on five generations of the Loh Family.
In 2015, the family decided to convert the building, in the heart of Ipoh Old Town, into a boutique hotel, to cater to the market demand for more accommodations in that area of Ipoh.
Restoration of the building took about two years, with investment of time, money and energy, plus having to make many painful decisions on how best to preserve the building but at the same time fulfil all building fire safety requirements as stipulated by the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia.
To that end, a new steel framework was erected within the pre-war shop, with a raft foundation to avoid piling works within the heritage zone in the pre-war neighbourhood.
As you can imagine, this Loh ancestral home, now Ban Loong Hotel, is a combination of old and new, full of character in every nook and corner.
There are only nine rooms/suites, so you can expect a cosy, warm stay should you check in at Ban Loong Hotel.
