Spicy Noodle Challenge in Ipoh at Uncle KinG, the Original Chili Pan Mee
While waiting for the balloon drop event at AEON MALL Kinta City on Malaysia Day yesterday in conjunction with the shopping mall’s 35th anniversary, I spied with my little eye, this food kiosk situated in the Complex food court.
If not mistaken, this kiosk opened just slightly a month ago, its 8th outlet for Uncle KinG, and first outside Penang, serving original chilli pan mee (noodle).
If you are from Penang, Uncle KinG needs no introduction. Established in 2015 as Uncle Kin in honour of the founder’s uncle who crafted this pan mee recipe, you can see long queues at its outlets, especially the one in Queensbay Mall on weekends and public holidays.
Surely Uncle KinG has got something unique? Indeed, and the answer lies in his…. well, I shall not reveal the secret as it is for you to find out!
There are three pan mee options on the menu: Signature Dry Chilli Pan Mee, Dark Sauce Dry Pan Mee, and Pan Mee Soup. All dishes are served with similar condiments of a tablespoonful of fried anchovies, along with the same quantity of fried onions, one half-boiled egg, and two fish balls.
Besides these noodles, other items on the menu are Fish Ball Soup, Half Boiled Egg, and of course, Uncle KinG’s special Golden Chilli Flakes (per bottle).
Uncle KinG is a pork-free outlet. The meat used in the noodles is solely chicken, finely minced.
Uncle KinG’s Signature Dry Chilli Pan Mee is super spicy, but if that’s not enough for you, feel free to add a free-flow of sambal! Let me forewarn you not to be misled by its presentation. Signature Dry Chilli Pan Mee definitely looks the same as Dark Sauce Dry Pan Mee….until you stir everything in your bowl and start eating. The longer you eat, the spicier it gets, until you perspire from your scalp! Ah, what a kick!
For foodies who are not accustomed to eating chillies, worry not, as the other two pan mee options (Dark Sauce and Soup) are non-spicy. So, a whole family or group of friends can come by for a meal and everyone can still enjoy it wholeheartedly.
Let’s have a look at what my family had for lunch yesterday on Malaysia Day. The coffee is a prop only. HAHAHA Are you ready to take on the spicy noodle challenge? Head over to Kinta Village (Level 1), the food court at AEON MALL Kinta City, and look for Uncle KinG by the entrance.
