“Congratulations! We Are So Proud of You, Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh!”
On 29th March 2023, an eye-catching billboard, adorned with the radiant image of Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, the latest jewel in the crown of Oscar winners, was unveiled in Ipoh SOHO, evoking a sense of awe and wonder.
The spirited message emblazoned on it read, “Congratulations, we are so proud of you, Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, the first Asian winner of Best Actress at the 95th Academy Awards.” Gracefully perched on the fourth floor of a chic clothing store, the billboard casts a watchful eye over Michelle’s alma mater, SMK Convent.
The joyful event was a true testament to the unwavering solidarity of the Ave Maria Convent Alumni and Convent Old Girls’ Associations, who joined forces to celebrate Michelle Yeoh’s historic achievement by unveiling the billboard. Ipoh’s own icon, Michelle Yeoh, cemented her place in the annals of history by becoming the first Asian woman to clinch the Academy Award for best actress, for her unparalleled performance in the interdimensional blockbuster, “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Her euphoric win sparked a wave of jubilation among Asians worldwide, particularly those of Chinese descent, who hailed Michelle Yeoh as a true trailblazer, also an ambassador of hope. Indeed, she is the epitome of pride for Ipoh.
Moy Ooi Thye, president of the Ave Maria Convent Alumni Association, echoed the joyous sentiment by showering Michelle Yeoh with effusive praise and highlighting her empowering acceptance speech, which inspired women worldwide to pursue their aspirations with unwavering courage. Meanwhile, Chik Mun Ling, deputy president of the Ave Maria Convent Alumni Association, conveyed heartfelt felicitations to Michelle Yeoh, accompanied by warm wishes for her mother’s well-being.
Ms. Agnes Wong, president of the Convent Old Girls’ Association, proudly extolled Michelle Yeoh’s magnificent achievement and expressed her earnest desire for her alma mater’s celebrated alumna to revisit her roots and relive the cherished moments of her formative years.
The event was graced by the presence of Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh’s beloved mother, Datin Janet Yeoh, who lauded the Ave Maria Convent Alumni and Convent Old Girls’ Associations for their staunch support. The occasion was also attended by several distinguished guests, including Datin Jade Ting (AMCAA adviser), Dr. Ng Zee Meant (AMCAA Vice President), Jane Wong (AMCAA media committee member), Florina Ng (COGA Vice President), and several other committee members.
