One-Day Trip to Phatthalung: Exploring the Gems of this Southern Thailand Province
Phatthalung, an enchanting province in Southern Thailand, is a sanctuary of natural beauty and cultural depth. Though often overshadowed by its bustling neighbours, Phatthalung offers an idyllic escape with its serene landscapes, rich traditions, and authentic Thai charm. Situated about 90 kilometres from Hat Yai City, a drive from the city is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
This trip to Phatthalung was an extension of our rail adventure from KL Sentral (Malaysia) on board the Fortune Dragon Express direct chartered train to Hat Yai City (Thailand), organised by premier travel agency based in Ipoh, Golden Century Tour & Travel.
With an itinerary curated by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in collaboration with Thaksin University, this one-day adventure to Phatthalung provided pursuits for all tourists — from relaxation to adventure.
First Stop: Khao Chaison Hot Spring
Our first stop was the Khao Chaison Hot Spring, one of Phatthalung’s most cherished natural attractions. Renowned for its mineral-rich waters, the hot spring was a haven for locals and visitors alike, offering a tranquil escape from the everyday bustle. We found three thermal pools, each with varying temperatures, catering to different preferences, from a gentle warmth to a more intense heat. The spot was perfect for families and those simply looking to unwind.
Nestled amid lush greenery and rolling hills, the hot spring area offered a serene and peaceful atmosphere. For vacationers seeking an extra layer of relaxation, Thai massage services were available on-site, with prices starting at a very affordable 75 Baht for 30-minute foot or body massage.
The skilled masseuses, trained extensively, offered deeply rejuvenating massages—an experience distinct from what are typically found in Thailand’s more commercial areas. This conservation zone, abundant with diverse flora and fauna, added to the charm. The soothing waters, scenic surroundings, and even sightings of free-running monkeys made this the perfect way to start our day in Phatthalung.
Second Stop: Nai Dong Bon Café
After our relaxing time at the hot springs, we moved on to Nai Dong Bon Café, a hidden gem encapsulating Phatthalung’s tranquillity. Set in a lush garden filled with towering elephant ear plants, plus vibrant greenery, this café presented a serene retreat that delighted both nature lovers, as well as photography enthusiasts. The garden’s harmonious ambiance, coupled with the café’s rustic charm, provided us with an ideal place to relax and unwind, as we enjoyed our lunch.
The menu celebrated Southern Thai cuisine, lovingly prepared by the owner’s mother and aunt. Every dish was bursting with authentic local flavours, enhanced by fresh herbs and spices. We particularly enjoyed their famous Thai tea, which paired perfectly with the savoury dishes.
Originally, this café was a private space for the artist-owner and his friends. However, after photos of the surroundings went viral, Nai Dong Bon Café quickly became a popular spot among both locals and tourists. Business days are only Saturdays and Sundays, but Nai Dong Bon Café has become a must-visit for anyone wanting to enjoy a peaceful meal in an idyllic garden setting.

Third Stop: Srinaka Model
Our third stop brought us to Srinaka Model, where we had the opportunity to dive into the rich cultural heritage of Phatthalung through a hands-on experience. The Do-It-Yourself workshop allowed us to engage in the traditional craft of natural dyeing, where we created our own tie-dye scarves and handkerchiefs using pigments sourced from local plants, such as rambutan leaves, jering and bekak kampung.
Under the guidance of patient and skilled artisans, we learned the intricacies of tie-dyeing, from preparing the materials to applying the natural dyes. The experience not only served as a creative outlet but also gave us a deeper connection to the local craftsmanship. Our handmade souvenirs were a beautiful reminder of Phatthalung’s artistic traditions.
Fourth Stop: ATV Adventure and Tuy Pao Relax Café
To satisfy our adventurous spirits, we headed to our next stop for an exhilarating ATV adventure. The rugged jungle terrain of Phatthalung provided the perfect backdrop for a thrilling ride. There are quite a few ATV operates here. With prices starting from just 450 Baht, the adventure took us through dense forests, across creeks, and along exciting trails. It was a heart-pounding way to immerse ourselves in the province’s stunning natural landscapes while the sky was pouring.
After the adrenaline rush, we stopped at Tuy Pao Relax Café, located on a hillside amidst the woods and rivers. This picturesque café felt like a hidden paradise, especially after a rain shower when the sounds of rushing water, birds, besides insects created a tranquil, almost magical atmosphere.
Even for those who did not take part in the ATV ride, the café was well worth a visit for its serene setting and breathtaking views. We enjoyed a cup of hot coffee while admiring the awesome surroundings. The baked buns with kaya, along with the homemade ice cream, were a delightful treat. Tuy Pao Relax Café was truly a place of solace in the heart of nature.
Fifth Stop: Thew Tat Highway Seafood Restaurant
As our day of exploration came to an end, we made one final stop at Thew Tat Highway Seafood Restaurant, located along the highway back to Hat Yai City. This popular dining spot is well known for its authentic Southern Thai seafood. It was the perfect place to cap off our trip with a delicious meal.
We indulged in fresh seafood dishes, from grilled prawns to spicy curries, all prepared using traditional Thai techniques. The inviting scenario of the restaurant made it an ideal spot for us to unwind and reflect on the wonderful experiences throughout the day.
