Unveiling Japan’s Seafood Treasures at the Japanese Seafood Fest 2024 in Lalaport, Bukit Bintang City Centre

Introduction:
The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and Sendo Ichi Seafood jointly organised the Japanese Seafood Fest 2024 at Lalaport, Bukit Bintang City Centre, Kuala Lumpur. During the official media launch held on 26th January 2024, attendees were treated to an awe-inspiring carving of a colossal 60kg tuna by renowned Masterchef Otsuka Kenji of Sushi Yoshi.

At the official media launch, Koichi Takano, Managing Director of JETRO Kuala Lumpur highlighted the significance of this culinary celebration.

“Our role at JETRO is to support the export of Japanese products including food globally. In Malaysia, we are delighted to note the value of food exports from Japan to Malaysia has more than tripled over the past five years. We are deeply grateful to Malaysians who recognise and have an appreciation for the quality and the taste that only Japanese food can bring,” stated Koichi Takano, Managing Director of JETRO Kuala Lumpur.

Media friends were provided with a unique opportunity to savour Japan’s seafood delights, featuring the finest catches such as Maguro (Bluefin Tuna), Kaki (Oyster), Hotate (Scallop), Saba (Mackerel), and Hamachi (Yellowtail).

The Tuna Cutting Ceremony:
The event kicked off with a palpable sense of excitement as guests gathered around to witness the traditional Japanese art of tuna cutting. Chef Otsuka Kenji of Sushi Yoshi skilfully wielded his knife, expertly dissecting the massive 60kg tuna into pristine sashimi slices.

Sampling Japan’s Seafood Treasures:
Following the captivating tuna-cutting ceremony, attendees were treated to a delightful sampling of Japan’s seafood offerings.

This first-ever Japanese Seafood Fest, to strengthen cultural and business ties between Japan and Malaysia, not only showcases the artistry of Japanese chefs but also allows guests to savour the essence of Japan’s seafood treasures. The 60kg bluefin tuna was specially air-flown from Japan and arrived in Kuala Lumpur on the morning of the Japanese Seafood Fest 2024, so it was absolutely fresh.

From the mesmerising tuna-cutting ceremony to the exquisite flavours of the Bluefin Tuna, Oyster, Scallop, Mackerel and Yellowtail, the event was a celebration of Japan’s culinary heritage and its commitment to delivering unparalleled seafood experiences.

“Today is a significant occasion as JETRO and Sendo Ichi unite for the Japanese Seafood Fest 2024. This event serves as a platform to introduce and highlight the excellence of fresh, sustainable seafood directly imported from Japan. Sendo Ichi upholds its commitment to the core principle of ‘freshness first,” said Aldred Yaw, General Manager of Sendo Ichi Malaysia.

As the media launch came to a close, attendees were left with a newfound appreciation for the refined flavours that the ocean offers along with the cultural significance that came with every delectable bite.

The Japanese Seafood Fest 2024 takes place from 26th to 28th January 2024 from 1pm to 7pm at the WOW Plaza (South Entrance). Visitors are invited to register for the event to receive a RM20 cash voucher from Mochiya Fine Food Store. As part of the interactive experience, attendees at the festival can participate in a quiz to test their knowledge and be rewarded with samples of fresh sashimi.

To conclude the culinary adventure, visitors are also invited to try on a “yukata” (traditional Japanese garment) as a commemoration.
