Tough Action Against Errant Landowners in Ipoh

Ipoh City Mayor Y.Bhg. Dato’ Rumaizi Bin Baharin means business. Property owners who deliberately leave their land unmanaged, thus endangering the lives of neighbours through dengue or Chikungunya outbreaks, will face tough action, such as being compounded.

According to the Mayor, an estimated 40,000 lots throughout the city have been identified as land that owners have left unattended.

He said, “It’s difficult for us to handle private land, Therefore, we decided to issue a compound to them. 40,000 is not a small number, so it takes some time to resolve.”

Nonetheless, he said, compounding is a last resort as landowners are first reprimanded and monitored, as he called on owners to be responsible for their property and to upkeep cleanliness.

At the same time, homeowners are urged to manage their garbage better, for instance, using rubbish bins properly and placing refuse in appropriate bags for easier collection.

Admitting that proper waste management boils down to awareness and attitude, the Mayor expressed his disappointment that one of the major problems in Ipoh is the dumping of illegal waste, including in public sports of residential areas.

“This not only worsens the scene, but slows down the work and makes it difficult to collect garbage,” he said.

Dato’ Rumaizi also stressed that public properties under the Ipoh City Council are always well managed and regularly monitored.

It was reported in the press that the number of Chikungunya outbreaks in Perak has increased by more than 30 times, as 454 cases were recorded from the beginning of this year until 23rd May, compared to just 13 cases during the same period last year.
