The Watoto Children’s Choir Is Back!
Yes! Having attended the Watoto Children’s Choir in Ipoh in 2014, and being uplifted by the children’s fighting spirit against the many adversaries that have plagued their young lives, I am more than willing to support them in their roadshow once again.
The 18 children, orphans from the ages of six to 13 years old, will be accompanied by ten adults. These children have lost one or both parents to AIDS or to the war, and now live in a Watoto village in Kampala, Uganda. Watoto, by the way, means “children” in the Swahili language.
The choir will present a blend of native African rhythms, contemporary gospel music and ethnic dance, as well as putting across Watoto’s vision and mission by sharing personal stories, music and dance. On tour, these children represent the many other African kids who have experienced similar heartbreaking pain and suffering.
This annual tour has taken the choir to various parts of Asia, as well as North & South America, Oceania and Europe. The children have even performed for royalty and world leaders at the Buckingham Palace and the White House.
The choir has also released several albums to raise funds for the Watoto Child Care Ministries, three baby home, three primary schools, a high school and a vocational school. Watoto operates through sponsorship in the form of parcel or monetary gifts including programme like “Sponsor A Life” that enables Watoto to rescue abandoned children and vulnerable women.
This current Asian tour titled “Oh What Love” to help Rescue, Raise, Rebuild is making Ipoh one of its stops. Come and be inspired by the children as they celebrate life through their music, dancing and personal stories.
