Featuring a golden-black-earthy colour scheme, 1969 Business Suites is Ipoh’s latest business boutique hotel. Opened its doors to guests since April, its soft launch ceremony was held yesterday morning, graced by the owners, management team, fellow colleagues from sister companies and invited guests.

With the catchy name of 1969 Business Suites, which is easy to remember, this is not a conventional hotel. The owners repurposed two units of corner shoplots by converting them from two-storey buildings to three storeys, and renovating them into hotel rooms, putting every inch of space to good use, with attention to detail.

The two new concept back-to-back shoplots, identified as Tower A and Tower B, has 20 and 22 rooms respectively. On the ground floor of Tower B is CawanMu, the hotel’s F&B outlet that serves a Malaysian fusion menu, with a twist.

If you had wondered why I did not capture a photograph of the hotel’s facade as I normally would do, it is because the hotel will unveil a secret design of its exterior next month. So, let’s just stay tuned!

Also under wraps is the addition of 19 guest rooms, a gym, two function rooms and a rooftop lap pool. All these amenities will be spread out over two other shoplots adjacent to Tower A.

By the way, the minimalist 1969 Business Suites is a combination of modern chic and nostalgia, that is set up to “speak” to guests to patronise for a relaxing, comfortable and luxurious stay.

1969 Business Suites, although the company’s first hospitality property, will soon be joined by another 130-room hotel-cum-serviced apartment development along Jalan Kampar and a high-end backpackers hostel in Tambun, both in the vicinity of Ipoh. These two properties in the pipeline, similar to 1969 Business Suites, will also create value to existing buildings.

Starting with these three hotel properties, 1969 hotel chain plans to offer at least 1000 guest rooms, expanding beyond Perak, before they venture into China. It is clearly seen that the owners already have an eye on the Land of the Red Dragon. They are also planning to export their CawanMu F&B brand alongside 1969.

During the soft launch ceremony, there was another reason for the owners and management to be proud of. The hotel’s iconic backdrop, made entirely from one sen coins, gained an entry into the Malaysia Book of Records as the largest such mural in the country, measuring 5.73 metres in length by 2.62 metres in height.

The mural took artisan Wong Mun Hong and his team of three assistants two weeks to complete. First, the coins where glued onto the wall, then sections of the wall were polished to bring out the company logo. Last but not least, a coat of wax was applied. All in all, 53593 one sen coins were used, collected over the past few years.

According to Mr. Tony Wong, co-founder of 1969 Business Suites, the mural preserves the value of the Malaysian one sen coin. He said, “I remember collecting one sen coins when I was a child, as 20 of these could buy me my favourite biscuits. Since Bank Negara has stopped producing these one sen copper coins, it is all the more important to keep them for the future generation. This mural at 1969 Business Suites has created another story for our guests.”

“What about the rooms,” I hear you asking. Calm down, they will be in another post on another day. So, what you must do is to keep your eyes peeled for that post! Till then!
