10,000 Langkah Berbusana @ Kampong Bharu

Following the official launch of Road to Agro Tourism Vol. 3 that was organised by Malaysia Tourism Council (MTC with tagline: Make Tourism Champion) in conjunction with Federal Territory Day on 1st Feb, one of the major activities during the first night for delegates was the 10,000 Langkah Berbusana @ Kg Bharu.

It was very apt to participate in a local event, since the 4D/3N familiaristion tour began in Kampong Bharu itself, from the new TAMU Hotel & Suites.

Before the walk began, we were treated to a silat showcase by members of Persatuan Dunia Seni Silat Melayu Malaysia at the lobby of TAMU Hotel. It was an appropriate preview to 10,000 Langkah Berbusana @ Kg Bharu as silat is a national heritage.

Our walk around Kampong Bharu began at about 11pm. Although I have been to Kampong Bharu a number of times previously, I had never visited on foot, let alone in the dark of the night.

Joining 10,000 Langkah Berbusana @ Kg Bharu at the invitation of MTC provided me an opportunity to get to know Kg Bharu at another level, rather than just giving the oldest Malay residential area in the heart of Kuala Lumpur a cursory look.

It wasn’t just any walk – a night tour presented the area in a different light. Additionally, the 10,000 Langkah Berbusana @ Kg Bharu event required participants to be garbed in Malay traditional costumes complete with headdress. Talk about bringing culture and tradition to the people!

The walk was participated by at least 300 people from all age groups, including the 50-strong delegation of Road to Agro Tourism Vol. 3.

Did you know that Kampong Bharu is a haven for foodies? Well, I didn’t. Admittedly, we did not have the time to indulge in food during the walk, and even if we did, we were already replete from the scrumptious buffet dinner at Suasana @ 27, TAMU Hotel’s coffee house.

Therefore, I made a promise to myself to make a personal food trail in the area in the near future.

Kampong Bahru, with seven villages situated within, namely Kampung Periok, Kampung Masjid, Kampung Atas, Kampung Bawah, Kampung Hujong Pasir, Kampung Paya and Kampung Pindah, is very strategically located in Kuala Lumpur city.

With a modern archway that is neon-lighted at night that serves as the gateway to the settlement, it exudes an old world charm that one is hard pressed to find in a metropolitan city like Kuala Lumpur.

Kampong Bharu Development Corporation (KBCORP) is making much effort in preserving this identity amidst development because there are many people who still want to personally experience the Kampong Bharu as we currently know it.

Making our way around Kampong Bharu through many alleyways lined by wooden houses, we finally clocked the imaginary 10,000 steps.

The event concluded with the distribution of the area’s most popular bubur lambuk that is only sold at the largest Pasar Ramadan here during the fasting month.
