A Romantic Dinner Overlooking Kuala Lumpur’s Cityscape @ Cielo KL 希洛天空海鲜馆

When I was planning my recent 3D/2N solo trip to the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, all I wanted to do was to pack my days with as many interesting things to do and see, and of course, eat.

1. Cielo KL 希洛天空海鲜馆

One of the dining places that was recommended to me was Cielo KL 希洛天空海鲜馆, a 3-month-old seafood rooftop restaurant and lounge atop Vida Bukit Ceylon (apartment block), on the fringe of Changkat Bukit Bintang.

I am familiar with the area as I once had lunch at STG Bukit Ceylon, which is situated on the ground floor of Vida Bukit Ceylon. To top it off, the location is just within a ten-minute walk from my accommodation, Holiday Inn Express Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

When I found out that Cielo KL is actually the seventh F&B outlet of Werner’s Group of Restaurants, I knew I would be in for an exceptional dining experience. I have participated in the company’s Gourmet Safari at Changkat Bukit Bintang two years ago, and that was one unforgettable dinner tour.

Setting foot at Vida Bukit Ceylon, I was greeted by a cordial hostess at the lobby. Upon confirming my reservation, I was served with a signature welcome drink. The default drink is alcoholic, but we can request for non-alcoholic beverages.

This hostess then led me to the elevator, which took me to the 23rd floor. When its door opened, I was greeted by another amiable hostess, who addressed me by name. In fact, all the staff had been notified that “Emily” has arrived. I appreciated the personal touch. The hostess led me up the stairs to the rooftop, where the restaurant is situated.

As I waited for dinner to begin, I took in the amazing view of the Kuala Lumpur cityscape at night, brightly lit up. On one side, we have The Exchange 106 (TRX) in the horizon, on the other side, there is the Petronas Twin Towers, and also KL Tower. I was seated at a table that provided a strategic view of both the Twin Towers and KL Tower. Yes, this would be an exquisite dinner, although the meal had yet to be served!

Enjoying the ambience of Cielo KL 希洛天空海鲜馆, if I could only use one adjective to describe the venue, it would be romantic. One word isn’t enough, as it is also cosy, classy and intimate. Also, perched atop Vida, it is away from the boisterous merry-making crowd of Changkat Bukit Bintang, yet in the heart of the happening city.

Dinner began soon enough, with complimentary Mini Laugen with Safron Seafood Dipping followed by items from the Menu Degustacion, or sampling menu.

The first item from the menu was a trio of appetisers: Akami Tuna Tartare, Duck Foie Gras Pâté and Pan-seared Scallop. Fine dining? Well, as said, this is a sample – regular-sized dishes are available from the à la carte menu.

The Akami Tuna Tartare is served with a mixture of avocado-kyuri salsa (sauce), mango salsa, wasabi tobiko and tomato vinaigrette. Together with Pan-seared Scallop, topped with green lentils, tomato confit, celeriac mousse with tobiko and tahini dressing, these two appetisers gave an impressive preview of the dinner to come.

As for the Duck Foie Gras Pâté, sandwiched by a layer of toasted brioche and moscato jelly, I have to say that the luxurious liver pâté is an acquired taste, which I did not know how to appreciate. I am never an innards person.

9. Abalone Consomme

Consomme (soup) was the rich abalone with salmon roe and sherry (wine). Although I do not consume alcohol, the alcoholic content would be very low after being boiled over a stove. Nonetheless, the sherry gave the clear soup a sweet flavour.

Moving on to the highlight of Menu Degustacion was Loup de Mer, a steamed seabass with barley risotto, confit tomato, butter poach baby carrot, vegetable quiche and garnished with sunflower sprout.

It is said that when you dine at Cielo KL, you must order its seafood. Serving classic seafood dishes using the Japanese-developed quick frozen Cell Alive System (CAS) technique of preservation, the seafood at Cielo tastes very fresh. Any fresher and we would have to catch them ourselves.

I could taste this freshness myself with Loup de Mer, and there was no “frozen” taste or texture that is common with frozen seafood. No heavy sauces were required to cover up the frozen taste. Conversely, with the CAS technique used, a light steaming or grilling is sufficient to maintain the intensity and integrity of the meat flavours.

12. Iberico Lamb Loin

Another highlight served was Iberico Lamb Loin. Following the success of Werner’s Group of Restaurants’ Iberico Pork, exclusively introduced at Cielo is the Iberico Lamb Loin. It is believed that Cielo KL is the only restaurant in Malaysia that serves Iberico Lamb.

This lamb breed is a native to the region of Aragon in Spain. The animals are fed on mother’s milk and corn for the first two months of their lives. Their diet subsequently is high oleic sunflower seeds. Iberico lamb meat is considered one of the healthiest meats on the market not only due to their natural diet but also because they get to run free on the high mountains as they lead a stress-free life at the foot of the Pryreness mountain range.

Iberico lamb is served when they are only five months old. As a non-fan of red meat, I was surprised that the luxurious Iberico Lamb Loin was not as gamey as I had expected. In fact, the thinly sliced meat that was cooked to medium rare was buttery and easily melted in my mouth.

14. Homemade Salted Caramel Cheesecake

Dinner finished with a huge piece of homemade Salted Caramel Cheesecake, wrapped with pralinosa and salted caramel sauce, sprinkled with almond brittle on the sides. This rich dessert was a perfect conclusion to an evening of wining and dining at the rooftop restaurant.

Despite its setting, Cielo KL 希洛天空海鲜馆 encourages an unpretentious, casual dinner, where patrons do not have to get all dressed up just to enjoy a refined dining experience.

When dinner is over, guests are free to continue enjoying the ambience at the lounge downstairs (Level 23), to take delight in the same night sky view.

Therefore, if you are looking for the perfect venue for a memorable dinner, Cielo KL 希洛天空海鲜馆 should be taken into consideration. Its restaurant or lounge is also a good option for private functions.
