PWI Sumut Delegation Visits Perak To Further Strengthen Bilateral Ties

More than two years after an official trip to Medan, Indonesia by Perak media at the invitation of Kelab Sukan & Kebajikan Media Perak (in English: Perak Media Sports and Welfare Club) and sponsored by Persatuan Kontraktor Melayu Malaysia Negeri Perak (Perak Malay Contractors Association Malaysia), Persatuan Wartawan Indonesia (PWI) Provinsi Sumatera Utara (Sumut) made a return visit to Perak for 3D/2N last week, hosted by Persatuan Kontraktor Melayu Malaysia Negeri Perak (PKMM Perak).

The 40 media delegates represented 19 agencies, including Harian Analisa, Mimbar Umum, Harian Waspada, Harian Koran Medan, Komisi Infomasi Publik, Harian Medan Post, Mingguan Gebrak, Radio Republik Indonesia, Medan Bisnis, Harian Berita Sore, Televisi Republik Indonesia, Radio Sonya, MNC Group (RCTI, etc), Harian Sumut Pos, Harian Realitas, Harian Andalas, GoSumut.com and Harian Sinar Indonesia Baru.

This trip was a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was signed in Medan two years ago between PWI Sumut and Persatuan Wartawan Muslim (PWM) Perak (Read: Perak Media Official Visit to Medan, Indonesia).

The main objective of the MoU is to foster a closer working relationship between the press from Perak and North Sumatra, particularly in the areas of journalism and promotion of tourism.

On that Medan trip, a serious discussion was held on the media’s role in the era of ASEAN Economic Community (MEA).

The dialogue resulted in the establishment of a forum for communication between journalists from ASEAN nations, beginning with Indonesia and Malaysia.

The ten-point declaration was signed by the head of PWI Sumut H. Hermansjah and the then President of Perak Media Sports and Welfare Club (KSKMP) Wan Asrudi Wan Hasan, as well as their respective secretaries.

In Ipoh, during an official meeting at the headquarters of PKMM Perak in Meru, its Chairman, Datuk Wira Jamaluddin Bin Hj. Abdul Rahim, stressed on the importance of unity among Malaysians and Indonesians, for the fact that citizens of the two countries share many similarities.

He also expressed hopes that the establishment of a solid working relationship between the press fraternities of Perak and Sumut would open up more opportunities both ways.

With the support of PWI Sumut, Perak could very well be known to Indonesians as the destination for tourism, medical tourism, and investment.

To this end, it is crucial to have direct flights plying Sultan Azlan Shah Airport and Kualanamu International Airport (side note: Malindo Air ceased its Ipoh-Medan sector on 1st Oct, 2018).

Over 3D/2N in Perak, PWI Sumut delegates were taken on a tour of Movie Animation Park Studios (MAPS) to see for themselves the attractions available at this first animation theme park in Asia.

The Indonesians found MAPS impressive, especially its Stunt Legends bike and car stunt show as well as BoBoiBoy 4D Adventure. They even took time to personally enjoy the rides in the park.

It was full programme for the delegates, as they were then speedily whisked off to Labu Sayong Signature for hi-tea, sponsored by Menteri Besar Perak, and supported by Tourism Perak.

Besides being feted to popular local fare of bubur anak lebah and rendang tok, the meal was made more meaningful as they dined at a traditional Perak Malay kampung house, named Rumah Kutai.

Earlier, during a brief visit to a mini handicraft centre at Terminal Amanjaya, the Indonesians were able to purchase souvenirs and also try out madu kelulut (stingless bee honey).

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. So, at night, it was sports time, with a friendly futsal game between members of PWI Sumut versus KSKMP and Pemuda UMNO Bahagian Ipoh Barat. The score was 10 – 2 in favour of Perakians.

Other places that PWI Sumut visited while in Perak were Rumah Pengasih Amanjaya (drug rehabilitation centre) and DWJ Hotel, which is owned by Datuk Wira Jamaluddin.

Before leaving for Kuala Lumpur, head of PWI Sumut H. Hermansjah extended an invitation to PKMM Perak and KSKMP to visit North Sumatra, and to make a courtesy call on newly minted Governor, Edy Rahmayadi.
