“Other World” Opens in the New Immersive Art Gallery REXPERIENCE in REXKL
REXKL, a former cinema-turned-creative & cultural hub in downtown Kuala Lumpur, is now home to an immersive digital art gallery known as REXPERIENCE (RXP.KL). Transforming this cultural epicentre of Petaling Street, RXP.KL kickstarts with their inaugural multi-artist exhibition, “Other World” beginning 20th September, 2023.
RXP.KL is all about using the latest digital art to invoke interest and excitement for art. They inspire everyone to experience art by creating a space for people to learn, explore and be surrounded by amazing art. To this end, millions of Ringgit have been invested into advanced technology like sound and visuals, motion capture, and sensors to create immersive experiences in this large 8,800-square-foot former cinema.
“At REXPERIENCE, we’re redefining what an art gallery can be – it’s a chance to step into a world where technology and creativity meet in amazing ways. Our vision is to create exhibitions that spark discovery and inspiration amongst art lovers, young innovators, and travellers in search of genuine creative, cultural, and shared experiences,” said Sébastien Jurkowski, CEO-cum-Creative Director of RXP.KL.
“Other World” is an innovative digital art experience that changes the way traditional art is appreciated. It’s no longer about staring at pictures on a wall, rather, an immersive adventure that transports the audience to different realms, as though stepping into a whole new universe filled with wonder and imagination.
This hour-long show is divided into three main parts, with intermissions for one to think and absorb it all in. It’s about feeling the art and letting one’s imagination run wild. “Other World” promises to be a truly transformative experience that celebrates the endless possibilities of art.
Embark on mesmerising journeys within “Annihilation” by Colas Fiszman and Jonas Margraf, where dance, technology, and music blend together to tell an enthralling story. It’s a deep dive into a world where innovation and its consequences collide, to give a vivid glimpse into the way humanity grapples with technology.
Explore the hidden geometry of nature in “Foreign Nature” by Julius Horsthuis and Ben Lukas Boysen. This exhibit showcases intricate fractals that unveil the universe’s secrets. These spellbinding patterns go beyond mere creations which invite the audience to ponder new dimensions and uncover nature’s mathematical wonders.
Last but not least, “Yume” by Fahmi Hosnan and Ashish Khilnani revives traditional masterpieces, bridging the gap between history and innovation. Watch as classic artworks come to life through projection and motion, forging a connection of past versus present. From delicate landscapes to iconic pieces like “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” it pushes the boundaries of artistic expression.
In between these spectacular shows, there are intermittent interlude artworks by both local and international artists. These moments provide opportunities for reflection and connection, ensuring a fully immersive experience.
“REXPERIENCE is a transformative space that reimagines the legacy of REX Cinema. By adding an immersive art experience, we’re not just preserving history, we’re writing REXKL’s future. This collaboration between co-founders Eugene Yeo and Sébastien Jurkowski will allow us to blend multidisciplinary art form and technology to create a new kind of entertainment and artistic expression,” said Shin Chang, architect and Co-Founder of REXKL.
