MSVCR Ipoh Weekender Run

Members of the Malaysia and Singapore Vintage Car Register (MSVCR) from the northern and central regions, from as far as Malacca and even represented by members from Singapore, were in Ipoh over the weekend for fellowship.

The trip also created an opportunity for members in the convoy to get to know Ipoh better, a city that many have only passed through, travelling between the north and south of Peninsular Malaysia.

Among the tourist destinations visited were the family-centric Lost World of Tambun and the luxurious Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat.

The highlight of the trip, though, was a gathering of vehicles from MSVCR and those from the Perak Classic Car Club (PCCC) on Sunday morning at the parking area of Stadium Perak.

You might be aware that’s the regular weekly meet up point for PCCC but this special gathering not only attracted the participation of more vehicles from local members but also a huge turn out of classic/vintage car enthusiasts and fans.

Under the scorching morning sun, as we took the chance to check out the 76 gleaming beauties and to take photographs with them, hobbyists shared notes about restoration issues and mechanical concerns.

I had a personal guide, Dr. Haridev Menon (Dr. Dev), who explained about the differences in the many models of the vehicles displayed.

As a collector with six cars, Dr. Dev said that restoring cars is a labour of love. While there is no doubt that some collectors are doing it as an investment, many are buying and restoring for the sake of preserving the models that have been taken off the road.

He said, “At least, now when we look at old automobile magazines, we can identify with the cars and perhaps can say that we have seen it before, or taken it for a spin.

“Fortunately, it is easier and cheaper to restore cars these days with the low-cost accessibility of the internet plus the convenience of electronic payment gateways.

“Additionally, YouTube is a good source of information should we need to view a tutorial on how to fix certain parts of our baby.”

In true Malaysian style, refreshment was served during the “Open House”, still in the spirit of Chinese New Year.

The 3-hour gathering was a success, judging from the huge turnout, thanks to the hardworking committee members headed by popular emcee Mr. K.T. Pillai, owners of all the cars, as well as the enthusiastic members of the public.

Let’s hope more such gatherings will be organised to enable us to admire these rare gems which we hardly get to see!
