Maxis Centre Octagon Grand Opening Ceremony
The opening of Maxis Centre at the iconic Octagon augurs well for visitors to Ipoh, especially those who may feel “stranded” around the foodie haven of Ipoh New Town, where some of the city’s best eats are offered. Essential for tourists without own transport, e-hailing is the order of the day to move around the city, and data is required. In this context, of great assistance is Maxis Centre Octagon which is managed by True Mobile (M) Sdn. Bhd. with three partners: Alan, Paco and Abe.
The grand opening ceremony, on the auspicious date of 18th June 2023, was graced by Dato’ Ng representing the Perak Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCCI), the owner of Octagon.
For general information, Octagon was built on the land that was originally the Yau Tet Shin market. Known locally as “Pat Kok Lau” in Cantonese or “Pasar Bulat” in Malay, this two-storey circular building was formerly a must-stop destination where a good range of items was sold, including products exclusive to Ipoh such as Menglembu groundnuts and pomelos.
The Yau Tet Shin market was built in 1962 but was demolished in 2002 due to safety reasons. It was then utilised as a car park until 2008 when plans were mooted to revive this icon of Ipoh. PCCCI took up the task and the Octagon, with its architecture resembling the original Pat Kok Lau to preserve its legacy, was completed in 2016. This 23-storey luxury condominium with commercial lots on the ground floor is the tallest building in Ipoh city centre. Its existence surely cannot be missed.
Joining Dato’ Ng on the VIP guest list were State Assemblyperson for Bercham YB Ong Boon Piow, Maxis Northern Manager Patrick Lee, and Oppo Northern Manager Du Bo.
Revving up the event were Knights MC Northern Chapter members, who came on their big bikes from all over Penang and Perak. Their unwavering support was expected, as True Mobile (M) Sdn. Bhd. company director Alan is the motorcycle club’s secretary, while another director Paco who just rewarded himself with a big bike, is a newly-minted committee member. YB Ong Boon Piow is also a Knights MC member.
Membership to Knights MC is open to all owners of big bikes of at least 500cc, with no requirement for specific brands. There are currently 60+ members in Perak, with a national total that exceeds a hundred, and growing.
