It was an evening of nostalgia, when hundreds of past pupils of Mariaville Good Shepherd Kindergarten Ipoh, gathered for an occasion of camaraderie. It was the first-ever gathering-cum-dinner celebration for this kindergarten, bringing together past pupils and teaching staff from near and far.
Mariaville Good Shepherd Kindergarten Ipoh was established in 1980 by Sr. Teresa Chye, a Good Shepherd Sister. There were only three pupils, and one teacher, Mrs. Bernice Spikerman, at the time.
Over the years, pupil enrolment grew as the kindergarten, owned by the Good Shepherd Sisters, continuously upgrades its facilities and also train teachers with qualification, as required by the Ministry of Education.
It was indeed a heart-warming event when past pupils came together on 1st December, 2018 at the Tower Regency Hotel Ipoh, and recounted their progress at Mariaville Good Shepherd Kindergarten, as well as shared how they were shaped into what they are today.
While the younger ones are at school or university, the earlier batches of pupils from the 1980s have proceeded to achieve success in their respective careers.
Present at the dinner event were Assistant Director En. Dzul Hanan bin Ghazali of the Perak State Education Department, and three officials from Open University Malaysia, where most Mariaville teachers were trained in Early Childhood Education.
Said Sr. Theresa Chye, “It’s heartening to see how the kindergarten has grown from its first class of three pupils back in 1980, 38 years ago. This is because parents have confidence in the kindergarten as their children do well in primary school after they have graduated from Mariaville Kindergarten.”
During the event, a PowerPoint presentation was played, bringing smiles to the faces of the audience, as they took a trip down memory lane. To keep guests entertained were also stage performances by staff and past pupils of the kindergarten. It concluded with a lucky draw.
