Learn Lion & Dragon Dance In Ipoh
Many people have the misconception that one needs to know martial art in order to be in a lion or dragon dance troupe. It’s good to have a martial art background but it is not compulsory.
I went to Wisma Chin Woo on Sunday afternoon to check out the young boys and girls going through their paces, under the watchful eyes of their instructors. It’s heartening to see that children as young as 7 years old train so hard for two hours every Sunday, without complaints!
Ipoh Chinese Chinwoo Athletic Association conducts lion and dragon classes in addition to wushu and Chinese traditional dances every Sunday, and it is amazing that students only have to pay RM10 a month to learn any, or all of the arts, offered by the association! I don’t think we could learn anything for such a minimal fee, even if the cost of living in Ipoh is already low!
It was also interesting to note that many girls are picking up lion and dragon dance, sweating it out together with the boys. A mother I spoke to, told me that she has two children attending classes at Ipoh Chin Woo because this is good exercise for them. Nowadays, parents dare not allow their children to play outdoors anymore, so this is a good way to expend their energy. Members of Ipoh Chin Woo are also like family.
Anyone who wants to learn lion and/or dragon dance can contact Ipoh Chinese Chinwoo Athletic Association directly. Information is provided at the end of this post.
