Launch of Visit Perak Year 2017 Campaign
Less than three months into 2016, Perak’s tourism authority has stepped up efforts to promote the state as a prime tourist destination not only within the country but also internationally.
While these efforts are being made, a campaign for Visit Perak Year which is earmarked for 2017 was launched yesterday at the Ipoh Railway Station by Perak Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri DiRaja Dr. Zambry bin Abd. Kadir.
The campaign is a collaboration among the state government, Ipoh City Council and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad.
This public event was attended by Director General Tourism Malaysia Dato’ Mirza Mohammad Taiyab, State Executive Councillors led by the ExCo for Tourism YB Dato’ Nolee Ashilin bt. Dato’ Mohammed Radzi, Ipoh City Mayor Dato’ Zamri Man, District Officers, Heads of Departments as well as players of the tourism industry such as hoteliers, travel agents, tour guides and travel writers.
The theme for Visit Perak Year 2017 is ‘World of Wonders’ or ‘WOW’ in short.
Many people are still not aware that Perak received the highest number of domestic tourists for three consecutive years; 5.6 million in 2012, 6.01 million in 2013 and 7.0 million in 2014.
In fact, the Malaysian destination that receives the largest number of tourists in a year is Royal Belum, which is situated in the north of Perak.
In his opening address, Zambry gave credit for this outstanding performance to a committed ExCo, who is supported by a solid network of people in the industry, both from the government and private sector.
It is also favourable that both the Director General Tourism Malaysia (Dato’ Mirza Mohammad Taiyab) and Minister of Tourism & Culture (Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz) hail from Perak: Bagan Serai and Kuala Kangsar respectively.
“I always stress that we should not compete with other states such as Selangor, Penang and Johor but to complement them. Perak has all the attractions that any tourist would want.
“We have the best beaches, limestone hills, caves, food and just about anything that the other states have. How do we promote Perak? Think out of the box,” added Zambry.
As part of the campaign, selected ETS (Electric Train Service) trains will feature a total of three hundred back seat stickers promoting Visit Perak Year 2017 and to promote Rail Tourism in the state. Last year, the ETS served a whopping 1,807,827 passengers.
Also involved in the VPY 2017 campaign are bus and taxi companies. All these efforts are a bid to maintain Perak’s current top position as the best tourist destination in Malaysia for locals.
2017 will be an exciting year for the tourism industry in Perak with the expected July 2016 opening of Movie Animation Parks Studios (MAPS), the RM450 million Asia’s first animation theme park, located in Meru Raya, Ipoh.
The state government is optimistic that the iconic landmark of MAPS will not only boost tourist arrivals from within Malaysia and neighbouring countries, but also improve the overall economy of the state.
As it is, Perak already has many destinations of world standard, from Royal Belum to UNESCO World Heritage Site Lenggong Valley, Pangkor Island and Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve, just to name a few.
